2017-2018 School Year Trimester #3 S.T.E.A.M. Classes
Animal Architects (Grades K-3)
Tunnels, bridges, dams- humans aren’t the only ones who build these structures!
Explore animal architects (works and worlds) through informational books, videos and
projects.
Lego Exploration (Grades K-6)
Take the Lego Challenge. Each week students will explore engineering using LEGO bricks. In cooperative groups students will ask questions, define problems and design their own solutions.
Unleash Your Wild Side (Grades K-3)
From the arctic to the high-desert, students will investigate the different ecosystems through creative, learn-by-doing art projects that inspect the the science of the most intricate environments of the globe. Students will report back on the unique aspects of the places and creatures they encounter that day.
Meet the Edison! (Robotics) K-6 grade
In this STEAM class students will discover the world of robotics, computer science, coding, electronics and engineering. Using fun programmable robots students will have hands-on engaging robot experiences. Programmable robots, like the Edison robot, empower you with the skills for the next generation of technology creators.
City X- 3-D Print (Grades 2-4)
City X needs your help! There are many problems to be solved when starting a new colony on a different planet. In this project students will use design thinking and creative problem solving to invent, design, and prototype something that solves a character's problem. City X teaches basic 3D modeling, printing & design thinking skills to highlight the importance of creativity in problem solving.
My Engineering Marvels (Grades 2-5)
Get to know some of the world's greatest marvels: Channel Tunnel, Golden Gate Bridge, Great Wall of China, Hover Dam, Kingda KA Roller Coaster, Palm Islands, Panama Canal, Pyramids of Egypt. Working in groups, students will construct a bridge, channel, landslide, pyramid, wall, and a roller coaster using world famous designs.
Rolling Around (Grades 3-5)
Students will investigate the affects of different forces, friction, gravity, and the incline plane, on non-motorized moving objects and vehicles they design and construct from recycled materials. Students will also design and construct an interactive, interchangeable Roller Coaster Wall using cardboard tubes.
Southside Stewards (Grade 4-6)
This class will focus on being good stewards of Southside's interpretive trail. We want our trail to be accessible to the public so students will clean and repair the trail, create a sign for the county road and make a map for hikers. Southside Stewards will also identify native plants through research and and share their descriptions.
Camera! Action! Video! (Grades 3-6)
Students will learn the basics of photography, video production using iMovie and story line. Through cooperative groups, students will create trailer films to teach positive behavior on the playground and for the common areas around our school. These trailer films will teach future students Southside expectations.
Genius Hour--Unlock Your Inner Genius (6th Grade)
Students of all levels are empowered to explore their own passions. Every Genius Hour project has a driving question that will take time, deep thought, and research to answer. Students will share their final product or project.
Animal Architects (Grades K-3)
Tunnels, bridges, dams- humans aren’t the only ones who build these structures!
Explore animal architects’ works and worlds through informational books, videos and
Projects.
Lego Exploration (Grades K-6)
Take the Lego Challenge. Each week students will explore engineering using LEGO bricks. In Cooperative groups students will ask questions, define problems and design their own solutions.
Bubble Bonanza (Grades K-3)
Students will create a stage show about bubbles for an amusement park! They will explore how bubbles behave and investigate the properties of different materials as they engineer all kinds of bubble wands.

This class will answer the questions-What is a Calorie? How Does The Food You Eat Affect Your Brain? What is Obesity? What is the Food Pyramid? Students will learn to prepare a meal for their family at home.
FAbslam (Grades 4-6)
Digital fabrication competition where youth learn and practice design, iteration, and rapid prototyping skills primarily focused on 3D design and 3D printing. l A challenge theme is presented and each team works to develop a product that fits the theme and meets requirements.
Chess (Grades 4-6)
Chess is back as a S.T.E.A.M. choice, so whether you are a beginner or an expert, come join the fun!
