"I really enjoyed the capstone poetry because it allowed the whole class to feel more connected by learning new things students shared in their poems. It also allowed students to express their ideas in the poem given the kind of universal topic."
“I felt more creatively empowered than ever before. This class felt like a kinda safe space for me to express my feelings with openness and challenged me to think critically as young adult.”
“Something I enjoyed this semester was the poem section we had to do. I enjoyed this part because although it caused me a lot of stress, and I was super nervous for presenting, I gave me the opportunity to step out of my comfort zone in front of my peers. I think it really helped me look at myself and see who I am and to see that in some of my classmates as well.”
"I enjoyed the poetry portion of this semester. I feel like it was different from regular units given to us which made it exciting and I felt like it was well planned and thought out."
"I learned a lot about myself. with the poetry. I feel that it was very physiologic, and led me to reseal things about me that I didn't know before"
"I liked the challenge of the poem"
"I enjoyed the capstone, though it was hard work and nerve racking, it allowed me to dig deep and write something meaningful to me which felt good."
Spoken Word Poetry can be intimidating for some students--it requires honesty and vulnerability and a willingness to let others see who we really are and what we really care about. Adam Gottlieb fosters a safe, creative space for our students to surpass the challenge of this assessment. His workshops help them confidently work through the process and produce a final project of which they are truly proud. This year my students' performances left me speechless, in tears, and inexplicably proud of their courage.

The poetry unit is something I look forward to each year, as it gives students the opportunity to speak their mind and write about something that is important to them, while showing them how to gather and narrow down their thoughts. One of the largest benefits of the workshops is seeing the support among students. Each year we have students who share personal details about their life, and this gives them a safe space to share those stories. The students are able to build connections with each other on such a different level, relate to each other, and they show a level of comfort for one another that would not be seen anywhere else in an education setting. Most importantly, by sharing these stories, students are reminded that they are not alone in their struggles.
