Kingsford Heights Elementary School is proud to have ongoing community involvement and partnerships that improve the lives and learning of our students and staff. We have chosen to highlight a few of our most prominent partners including Boys and Girls Club of LaPorte County, LaPorte County Public Library, as well as our KH American Legion. Through numerous opportunities, our students feel a bigger sense of community and pride in where they attend school, the town they live in, and futures they will seek. Community partners are an integral part of these student opportunities as they offer real world application of the STEM-based skills learned in the classroom. Collaboration with our partners has led to feedback on how we can best instruct employability skills and increase STEM knowledge for our students. One example of our collaboration involving actionable feedback is when the KHES principal, STEM leadership members and Boys and Girls Club leaders meet at least 2 times per semester to discuss areas of improvement, planning ideas, action steps, and expanded STEM programming for KHES students. Creative changes and expanded programming have been the result.
From community leaders to businesses to local organizations, we are excited to expand relationships to allow students invaluable experiences that strengthen their passion for STEM.
Kingsford Heights Elementary School meets with partners to reflect, plan and implement STEM opportunities for our students. The collaboration and forward thinking process is meaningful and valued by all. Their feedback is beneficial and utilized in making decisions as we continue to expand our STEM program. Making strategic changes and purchases is a specific area where feedback has been very helpful for us. Our district STEM Advisory Board, made up of a diverse population, meets annually to collaborate, brainstorm and provide feedback regarding school and district implementation of STEM programs.
KHES is dedicated to providing our students with positive and diverse role models to support a better understanding for our students of STEM career possibilities . We intentionally support our students with exploration of careers, engagement with guest speakers and interaction with both in-person and virtual professionals to learn more about STEM careers. Community members and partners support career exploration by offering resources and opportunities for our students and staff.
Kingsford Heights Elementary School offers many additional learning opportunities for all of our students. Students are able to remain at school for clubs and activities, as well as join our LaPorte County Boys and Girls Club held at KHES after school from 3:00-6:00 pm every day. We offer clubs such as Robotics Club, Technology Club, STEAM Club and AG Club. Students engage in high interest and challenging competitions and activities taught by certified staff members and community partners. Additionally, our students participate in STEM related field trips and school and family STEM events that are intentional with providing a better understanding of STEM concepts, skills and careers. Parents appreciate the opportunities at KHES and students love to attend. Our community partners along with our local high school helps to support our clubs and events by volunteering and providing valuable supplies, expertise, and resources for us.
KHES is a small school with big opportunities for engagement for all students. Teachers provide students with consistent and exceptional STEM instruction and experiences throughout the year. Students also learn about STEM careers through presentations from STEM professionals, field trips and schoolwide events. However, even though our students may not realize it now as children, there are research based and documented inequities within the world of STEM careers and employment. Various demographic groups are underrepresented and we strive to engage these students in specific and intentional STEM learning opportunities to level the playing field . Through our extensive and varied STEM programming, we are able to encourage and address underrepresented student groups with unique opportunities. We will continue to develop and implement thoughtful and strategic methods of STEM support and learning opportunities for STEM in underrepresented populations.
