LOYOLA SPEECH & DEBATE

"Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter."

– Martin Luther King Jr.

The Speech & Debate program at Loyola High School of Los Angeles teaches critical thinking, research methods, public speaking, and advocacy while fostering a sense of teamwork, collaboration, and confidence among its Cubs. Loyola Speech & Debate is also one of the premier programs in Los Angeles and in all of Southern California, with members regularly qualifying for and participating in the Tournament of Champions and NSDA Nationals. For the 2022-23 school year, there are more than 50 students in the program.

Mission Statement

Our faculty, coaching staff, and students are committed to embracing and promoting the power of voice to ignite change, honoring diversity within our community, and preparing students to be effective citizens in the 21st century.

To further this mission, we prepare weekly throughout the academic year in both traditional face-to-face and distance learning formats to educate students and improve their skills in a variety of speech and debate events, currently including Lincoln-Douglas debate, Public Forum debate, Congressional debate, and Original Oratory. Throughout the year, students compete in local, regional, and national tournaments that vary in acclaim and experience level.
