My name is Sofia Sámano-Funk and I am a recent graduate from Cristo Rey San José Jesuit High School. I will be attending Brown University in the fall. During my time at Cristo Rey, I was involved in the debate team, folklórico group, and Student Leadership Society.
I am invested in social justice in my community and beyond, with my passion primarily in housing, immigration, and racial justice. At Brown, I hope to explore studies related to Education, Environmental Studies, and Political Science, with the ultimate goal of becoming either a teacher or policymaker. I endeavor to disrupt oppressive systems and build a more just society in all of my pursuits.
Hello, my name Is Aileen Sarmiento Velasco. I am a recent graduate from Seattle Prep, and I will be continuing my education at Gonzaga University this fall. During my time at Prep I was an executive on the Diversity Council for Latinx Club.
I have always made an effort to speak out about injustices and inequities because I am a first-generation woman of color from a low-income background and have seen firsthand how inequality and injustice affects people specifically in the Seattle area. By growing up in the Central District for most of my childhood I witnessed how poverty and other racial and socioeconomic inequalities affect marginalized people and future generations. Through my activism I hope to bring attention to the struggles that Black, Indigenous, and other people of color face everyday as a result of systemic racism.
Hello! My name is Darian Benitez Sanchez and I am an undocumented student at Brophy College Prep. As an immigrant, I've had a front-row seat at the injustices that the members of our communities have to endure, Thankfully, I have had the opportunity to work with the Brophy/Xavier Advocacy Club, Brophy Culture Project, ACLU, and Aliento towards justice for those who have been stripped of it. I also love Yerba Mate.
