Loyola College, a Catholic Minority Institution, was founded by the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in 1925 with the primary objective of providing university education in a Christian atmosphere for deserving students, irrespective of caste and creed. Loyola College was established with 75 undergraduate students of Mathematics, History, and Economics. Loyola College gained its autonomy in 1978 and has since been conferred with several Awards, including the status of “College with Potential for Excellence” in 2010 and a “College of Excellence” in 2014. Loyola was accredited by NAAC in 2021 with a CGPA of 3.55 on a four-point scale with a grade of A++ and was ranked 4th among Arts and Science Colleges in India by the National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF) in 2022. Currently, the college has about 9500 students and offers 19 postgraduate and 24 undergraduate degree programs, with active research being conducted in 12 departments. Loyola College provides quality education, with an incredible compendium of academic programs, innovative methodologies, and intensive research scope to its students. Loyola College is in its centenary year and the Centenary celebrations were inaugurated by the Honourable Chief Minister of Tamilnadu, Thiru. Mu. Ka. Stalin.
The Department of Statistics was founded as an independent undergraduate department in the year 1959. It regularly produced many outstanding students with university ranks. In 1982, the department was upgraded to a postgraduate department with the M.Sc. Statistics program. In rapid succession, the department evolved into a research department with the introduction of M.Phil. Programme in 1985 and the Ph.D. program in 1988. The department aims at providing to its students a strong theoretical foundation in Statistics on par with reputed international institutions and at the same time emphasizing application-oriented subjects in Statistics, Computing and Data Analytics. Prof. T. Manivannan was the founding head of the department and Dr. K. Balasubramanian, Dr. T. M. Durairajan, Dr. B. Chandrasekar and Dr. P. Chandrasekhar were early stalwarts of the department. The faculty members of the department serve other departments by way of teaching allied and elective courses and providing consultancy services. The areas of specialization of the department include Statistical inference, Reliability Theory, Statistical Quality control, Design of Experiments, Sampling Theory, Regression Analysis, Multivariate Analysis and Machine Learning.
