Get to know ms. swopes

Hello! My name is Teresa Swopes, and I am so excited to be your child's second-grade teacher this year! This will be my second year teaching second grade at Dewar. I have had the pleasure of working at Dewar Elementary for the past five years. Before my time at Dewar, I worked in a daycare in Hahira for five years as the lead teacher for 3- and 4-year-olds. I loved every minute of it, but when Covid hit, I took time off to homeschool my daughter.  

At Dewar, I started as a paraprofessional in kindergarten for three years, where I learned so much and gained valuable experience. For the 2024-2025 school year, I had the wonderful opportunity to work with second graders, as well as some fourth and fifth graders, helping them become more confident and eager learners. During my time at Dewar, I also completed my student teaching and earned my bachelor’s degree from Valdosta State University in 2025.  

I was born in Aurora, Illinois, and moved to Georgia when I was 7, growing up in Hahira. Once I started college, I moved to Valdosta, where I attended Wiregrass Georgia Technical College and obtained my cosmetology certificate. Afterward, I pursued my passion for teaching and earned my associate’s degree in education.  

One of my most inspiring goals for this year is to help each child feel confident and excited about learning. I believe that every child is unique and special. My hope is to create a classroom where everyone feels safe, happy, and eager to explore new ideas. When I'm not working, I love spending time with my 11-year-old daughter. I also enjoy hiking, shopping, journaling, spin classes, spending time with my niece and nephew, and going to the movies.
