Welcome to 5th grade! It is going to be the #bestyearever. Please do not hesitate to email me at Shilaheeter@lowndes.k12.ga.us if you have any questions. Communication is key to a great parent teacher relationship, and as a team we will be able to lift your child up in order for them to realize their potential.
I have more than 20 years of experience in education, and I am deeply passionate about my profession, particularly mathematics instruction. I enjoy incorporating a set of teaching strategies known as Whole Brain Teaching (WBT) into my daily instruction. WBT emphasizes a multimodal approach to learning, and I have found these strategies to be highly effective in my classroom. My goal is to create a positive, energetic, and engaging learning environment where students feel safe, supported, and confident taking academic risks.
I am also interested in using novelty and the physical classroom environment to promote student engagement through an instructional approach known as "classroom transformations." I enjoy designing immersive, themed learning experiences that encourage students to approach mathematics with curiosity and enthusiasm. As an elementary educator, I believe I help set the foundation for a child's academic career. One of my most important goals during the school year is to help foster a deep love for school and math within my students.
I am not a Valdosta native, but I am so happy to call it home. I grew up an Air Force brat and attended over 11 schools growing up. I settled in Valdosta when my dad retired and soon met my husband while attending Valdosta State University. My husband, David, recently retired from the Air Force. We have two boys, Gavin and Alex, that keep us very busy with school and sports.
