It is our goal to provide students a challenging learning environment that will encourage holistic growth and development with emphasis in critical thinking and reasoning in all content areas. It is our pleasure to play a role in this leg of your child's academic journey. With your support and joint collaboration, this school year will be productive and effective. We encourage parent involvement.
By the end of this school year, your child should be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide with fractions, understand and utilize problems that include place value with decimals, multiply and divide multi- digit whole numbers, solve real world math problems, solve problems with volume and graph points on the coordinate plane. Students will learn to classify shapes based on attributes. Fifth grade is loaded with fun, engaging math activities!
In fifth grade, we focus on three major topics, which are earth science, physical science, and life science. In earth science, we investigate how the earth is composed of processes. In physical science, we learn about the atom, electricity, and magnetism. In life science, we create models of cells, learn about classification, and how organisms impact the environment. Students are required to use critical thinking skills to apply to real-world situations and develop models that justify their thinking.
In fifth grade, students learn about American history from the end of the Civil War (late 1800s) up to the attack on September 11, 2001. Students learn America’s involvement in times such as World War I, the Great Depression, World War II, the Cold War, the Vietnam War, and other major historical events. Students will use critical thinking skills to develop their understanding of these events, and we incorporate reading and writing skills to reinforce reading instruction.
In fifth grade, we will be extending our knowledge of a variety of writing concepts like citing and using textual evidence to support the main idea of a passage and writing informative, opinion, and narrative essays. Rubrics for the district writing expectations are linked above. Students will continue to develop their grammar skills by working on sentence structure, parts of speech, and capitalization and punctuation rules.
By the end of the school year, students should be able to read and comprehend grade level literature (stories, dramas, poetry) and informational texts. Fifth grade expected Lexile level is a 920 by the end of the year. We will focus on standards involving main idea, theme, point of view, and comparing and contrasting. Students will also build their vocabulary with work on figurative language, context clues, and synonyms and antonyms.
