Sight Words
SIGHT WORDS
These are the sight words for Kindergarten. We will send the list home in Friday Folders, and a special list of each week of our focus words for that week. We try to focus on one word a week. For each list to be mastered, the student must identify 90% of the words on the list within 3 seconds by sight. We ask that you spend time with your child each week helping them identify and learn the sight words. Below the Word Lists are some suggested games to help learn the words. Thank you for your support from home!
Sight Word Practice Ideas
Flash Card Games
(write the words on index cards, post-its
popsicle sticks)
1. “Finders Keepers” Lay cards on table, face up.
Ask the student to find a given word. If they
find it, they keep it. Keep going until all cards
are picked up.
2. “Who has more?” -Give flash cards to student. If
they read the word within 3 seconds, they
keep the card. If not, you keep the card. The
goal is that the child has more than you at the
end of the game.
3. “Concentration”- Using double copies of the
words, take turns turning over two cards at a
time, trying to make a match. The player must
read the word correctly to get the match.
4. “Go Fish” - Using double copies of the words,
pass out all but 5-6 of the words. Put these in
a stack, face down, on the table. Look for
matches in your set of cards (each player
must be able to read the word or the set goes
in the stack on the table). Take turns asking
each other for cards to make matches. The
person with the most matches at the end is
the winner.
5. “BINGO” - Draw a simple Bingo card (5 boxes
wide and 5 high) and put sight words in the
boxes. You may need to repeat words to have
25 words. Say a word and let your child find the word on the card. Use beans or cereal as tokens.
6. Use magnetic refrigerator letters to make sight words and practice reading them.
7. Make words out of play-dough
8. Place sigh words around the house and let your child go on a scavenger hunt.
9. Make a Tic-Tac-Toe board with the sight words and play Tic-Tac-Toe anywhere!
10. Put the flashcards on the wall and turn out the lights….let your child use a flashlight to read the words!
11. KABOOM! Include a “KABOOM” card in your flashcards. Your child keeps every word they can read. When they get “KABOOM”, they lose all cards and start over!
