Data is all around us! As adults, we have to interpret data multiple times a day when reading news articles, scanning social media, and looking at weather reports. Because of this, we want to ensure our students can interpret data from a variety of graphs while being able to ask and answer questions from the graphical display.
Data Resources
YouCubed provides several data resources on topics relevant to students' lives. It also shows a wide variety of graphical displays to expand students' interpretations of what is a graph. These graphs are great for discussing notice and wonders while having a Data Talk.
You can also have your students collect data to create their own graphs. This site allows you to choose from a variety of graph types to create a graph digitally by inputting your data. This is a great tool to create sample graphs for discussions as well as compare student created graphs to other graph types displaying the same data.
Data is typically displayed for elementary students in picture graphs, tally charts, tables, pictographs, bar graphs, and dot plots (line plots). Venn diagrams are often used to compare similarities and differences, but they can also be used to display data. This link will give you a copy of slides with Venn diagram data examples for all elementary grade levels that you can use as inspiration for your classroom.
