Grading Policy

Hahira Middle School determines student progress through summative and formative assessments. Below you will find the grading scale that will be used by all teachers at Hahira Middle School, as well as the definitions for summative and formative assessments.

  • Summative Assessments are given periodically to determine at a particular point in time what students know and do not know. These may include mini assessments, performance tasks, unit tests, and culminating activities. Students will have three or more test grades and four or more performance tasks each nine weeks. The key is to think of summative assessment as a means to gauge, at a particular point in time, student learning relative to content standards. Because they are spread out and occur after instruction every few weeks, months, or once a year, summative assessments are tools to help evaluate the effectiveness of programs, school improvement goals, alignment of curriculum, or student placement in specific programs. Summative assessments happen too far down the learning path to provide information at the classroom level and to make instructional adjustments and interventions during the learning process. It takes formative assessment to accomplish this.

*Test grades = 50%

*Performance tasks- 30%

  • Formative Assessment is part of the instructional process. These include daily work, homework, and quick quizzes. Students will have at least five formative grades each nine weeks. When incorporated into classroom practice, it provides the information needed to adjust teaching and learning while they are happening. In this sense, formative assessments inform both teachers and students about student understanding at a point when timely adjustments can be made. These adjustments help to ensure students achieve targeted standards-based learning goals within a set time frame.

*Daily/homework grades= 20%

Late Work:

* If a student does not complete a formative assignment on the due date, he/she will be given an opportunity to turn in the assignment late for a maximum grade of 70%. Ten points will be deducted per day for summative assignments

*Ten points per day will be deducted for late performance tasks.
