In 1809, James Madison became President of America. He like, Thomas Jefferson, wanted to stop Great Britain from interfering in America's success. He wanted to do it in a peaceful way. The U.S. had a huge shipping industry and Great Britain wanted to slow it down or stop it. Many Republican congressmen wanted to stop Great Britain from interfering. Some young congressmen who felt very strongly about this were nicknamed the "War Hawks." They argued in Congress that the U.S. needed to declare war on Great Britain!

British weapons had even been found in some of the battles the U.S. had fought against the Native Americans. This made the War Hawks believe the British were aiding the Native Americans by giving them weapons.

The Federalist Congressmen did not want this, but more and more Republican Congressmen did. A vote was cast and the majority decision ruled. America would be declaring war on Great Britain!!! The War Hawks consistent please to stop Great Britain were successful!!!
