Prior to Lesson: Print the student record keeping sheet below for each student. This activity can be done independently or in groups of 2 to 4.
1. Students are placed in groups of 2 to 4. Groupings should consist of multiple ability levels. Students should all be encouraged to talk about their reasoning and explain their thinking.
2. Multiple answers are correct for each problem. Encourage the students to find different ways to solve each problem.
3. Prompt students to explain their thinking. Use the Questioning Prompt Guide to help guide your questions to adhere to the standards outlined in the mathematical practices. "Why are you choosing to divide $1.02 by 4? Encourage students to use their available tools such as a calculator (if permitted) as well as pencil and paper.
Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used.
