Dear teachers and parents,
The Common Core standards have obviously brought change to the elementary classroom. You probably heard glowing reviews as well as horrifying stories surrounding these new standards. Common Core Instruction Incorporating Mathematical Practices provides teachers with a efficient and effective approach to incorporating high interest activities and instructional strategies promoting conceptual understanding, problem solving, cooperative learning, reciprocal teaching, manipulative use, and real life applications. The basic skills outlined in the Mathematical Practices section of the Common Core Standards are crucial to the continued success and achievement of students in mathematics. The purpose of this study is to create a handbook for the implementation of these mathematical practices, imbedding them in instruction. The handbook is split into 5 focus areas: Operations and Algebraic Thinking, Number and Operations in Base Ten, Number and Operations - Fractions, Measurement & Data, and Geometry. This handbook is not meant to be a stand alone curriculum, but to enhance instruction and increase students' abilities within the basic skills laid out in the Mathematical Practices. The materials needed to complete these engaging activities can be found within in the handbook; therefore little outside resources are needed for successful implementation. Each activity is carefully designed with the student and researched strategies in mind.
This handbook is primarily designed for fifth graders due to the nature of the content area standard included within the handbook. The activities provided could be used as a challenge for students already proficient in preceding standards or as a supplement for students needing additional support in more complex standards. Research show parent support in a child's education increases engagement and achievement. It is my hope that this handbook provides teachers with a fun and easy way to promote the mathematical practices within the classroom. A strong foundation in elementary education has lasting positive effects in a child's educational and career path.
