The rest of the week will be spent on adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominators (don't forget to keep the denominator the same). We will then move into adding and subtracting mixed numbers. Yipes!

Social Studies: We finished our Ohio History Partner Projects last week. Now we are ready to sum up the major details with an individual in-class project. The students will be creating a digital "photo album" using Google Slides. They will find a picture to copy and paste into the slide about each of the main topics covered in our history project. Then, using their own words, they will type in a "caption" to explain the significance of each event.

Language Arts:

Science-This week we will look at nonfiction text structures and continue through our fossil unit!

FISH PUNCH LINE:

Q: Two pickles fell out of a jar onto the floor. What did one say to the other? A: Dill with it!

Weekly Update 1/22-1/25

Math: This week we will be finishing up Unit 4 by continuing to find the area and perimeter of rectangles and compound shapes (L-shaped rectangles). We will also be designing the floor plan for our very own dream house. After coming up with the floor plan, they will be finding the area and perimeter of the entire house and select rooms in the house. Maybe we have some future designers or architects in the bunch. It looks like the Unit 4 TEST will be on Thursday, January 31. So we will make the final due date for the Unit 4 Math Project be January 31 too. Look for information to come home this week about how to prepare for the test and you can find directions for the project on the "Math" page on this blog. Don't forget, there is also some online protractor practice available on your child's Google Classroom.

Social Studies: The presentations went well this week. Now, it is time to write. This week we will focus on taking the information they researched about their American Indian groups to create a Compare/Contrast multi-paragraph writing piece. They should be bringing home a rough draft for you to check out by mid-week. We will then type the final copy on their Chromebooks in class.

Language Arts:

Science-This week we will focus on nonfiction text features, different populations, and the relationships between predator vs. prey.

FISH PUNCH LINE:

Q: Why did the obtuse angle go to the beach? A: Because it was over 90 degrees.

Weekly Update 1/14-1/18

Math: We will begin this week by continuing to use our protractors to measure angles. By the end of the week we will be getting into learning about lines of symmetry. In between we will play our geometry version of the classic game show, $100,000 Pyramid. One contestant will be looking at a geometric figure or shape and will have to describe that shape to their partner in such a way that they will be able to name that shape. The trick is that they will only be able to use geometric terms in their description. For example, to describe a square they might say, "It is a quadrilateral with opposite sides that are parallel, four right angles, and all sides are the same length." It is usually a lot of fun!

Social Studies: This week the students will be presenting or showing off their American Indian project to the class. They do not need to have anything memorized, but they will come up in front of the class to show us their project and read off the details that they learned about the groups they chose to research. It would be great if they practiced reading through their project so that their presentation goes smoothly and so the rest of the class can clearly hear what is being presented. HERE is a link to the schedule for next week.

Language Arts:

  • Reading-This week we will finish comparing texts written as a poem, drama, or prose. Students will be able to identify the similarities and differences between all three types of text. We will also begin exploring the world of traditional literature this week in stations focusing on myths, legends, tall tales, fables, folktales, and fairy tales.
  • Writing-We will review writing a complete paragraph and the overall structure of a well-written paragraph. Students will have the opportunity to write about a specific biome during our new Life Science unit. Eventually our goal is for students to compose a multi-paragraph written response.
  • Language-Below are links of our Units 5-7 spelling words on Spelling City. We are officially finishing up our verb unit this week and the practice links are already on our ELA Google Classroom.

Science-Last week students made Google Drawing ocean ecosystems with examples of abiotic and biotic factors. This week we will focus on nonfiction text features, different populations, and the relationships between predator vs. prey.

Weekly Update 1/7-1/11

Math: This week we will start by reviewing the 3 different types of angles (acute, right, and obtuse). We will also by sorting triangles based on their angles. The types of triangles are acute triangles (all 3 angles are acute), right triangles (1 right angle), and obtuse triangles (1 obtuse angle). Next, we explore by building angles of different sizes before actually taking out our protractors and learning how to use them to measure angles.

Social Studies: We will spend most of this week finishing the in-class project where they are comparing one of Ohio's prehistoric people (Paleo, Archaic, Adena, Hopewell, or Fort Ancient) to one of Ohio's historic tribes (Shawnee, Miami, Ottawa, Wyandot, or Delaware). Your child is either working on a poster, a Google Slides presentation, a website from Google Sites, or an infographic on a website called, Venngage. Be sure to ask them which project they chose to do.

Language Arts:

  • Reading-This week we will compare texts written as a poem, drama, or prose. Students will be able to identify the similarities and differences between all three types of text. Our future trimester 2 units include: a unit surrounding traditional literature, point of view vs. perspective, character traits, nonfiction text features, and nonfiction text structures.
We are finishing up our verb unit and the practice links are already on our ELA Google Classroom. Students will have a quiz on Wednesday 1/9 over the seven literary devices we have discussed in class. Students can use the Poetry Symbaloo below to review and they also have a graphic organizer in their Writer's Notebook they filled out in class they can use to study.

Science-We have kicked off our Life Science unit with The Lorax by Dr. Seuss. We will discuss different types of ecosystems this week and abiotic and biotic factors within an ecosystem.

Weekly Update 12/10-12/14

Math: This week we will officially begin Unit 4, which consists of geometry, measurement conversions, and area/perimeter. We begin the week by estimating measurements of objects in the classroom to become familiar with different units of measure. Then we get into converting some measurements and understanding what happens to the number if we convert from a larger unit (meters) to a smaller unit (centimeters). Next, we will be introduced to perimeter by measuring the perimeter of some objects in the classroom and then strategies for finding the perimeter of rectangles. Along the way, the students will also be dealing with measurement while solving story problems. Information on the Unit 4 Project will be coming home on Monday. There are two options from which the students can choose. The due date will not be until near the end of January.

Social Studies: We have finished researching and gathering information about Ohio's prehistoric American Indians groups. Next, we will learn about the historic American Indian tribes that lived in Ohio, like the Shawnee, Miami, Wyandot, Ottawa, and Delaware. Our goal is to learn how those tribes interacted with the Europeans that moved into this area and how those interactions led to conflict and cooperation. Finally, your child will choose one of the historic Ohio tribes to learn more about. They will research and gather information about their tribe by using internet links that I have saved on a webquest.

Language Arts:

  • Reading-This week we will continue poetry stations in our reading class. We are identifying structural elements of poetry in small reading groups. Weekly Update 11/26-11/30

Math: We will switch back to working on multiplication this week. Now we are focusing on 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication, but our numbers will both be in the teens or a multiple of 10 like last week. For example, 16 x 12 can be solved by breaking apart one of the numbers. So we can do 10 x 12 and 6 x 12 to get the answer. The Unit 3 TEST will be Wednesday, December 5. Look for information to come home this Wednesday about preparing for the test. The Unit 3 Math Project is due Monday, December 3.

Social Studies: This week we will focus on the three branches of government. Students will need to know the three branches (executive, legislative, and judicial), what their jobs are, and what we call the people that work in those branches. If your child receives any responses to the letters they sent out a couple of weeks ago to their elected official have them bring it in so we can share the information with the entire class.

Language Arts:

  • Reading-We will finish up Theme 9 this week and students will be assessed on finding the main idea and details in a nonfiction text and summarizing a nonfiction text. Our next few units include point of view, nonfiction text features, and the differences between poetry, drama, and prose.
  • Writing-Students will choose topics from our Earth Science unit and compose three different paragraphs based on 3 different author's purposes. For example, if your child chooses the topic of water, they will then write a PERSUASIVE paragraph about water, an INFORMATIONAL paragraph about water, and an ENTERTAINING paragraph about water. I will also be sending home flashcards for students to begin studying for their Earth Science unit test. I plan on giving the test on Monday 12/10.

Weekly Update 11/13-11/16

Math: We will continue working on division this week. However, to get them ready for 3-digit by 1-digit division we will practice multiplying by multiples of 10. For example, if they know 6 x 5 = 30, then it will be easy to multiply 60 x 5 to get 300. Keep practicing those division facts to be ready for our Mad Minute on Friday.

Social Studies: This week we will review the five freedoms from the First Amendment before exercising our right to petition the government. The students will be writing a letter to an elected official. As a class we will brainstorm ideas (issues or questions) to write about in our letters. Then they will decide who would be best to write to based on that idea. We may have some letters going to the mayor of Loveland, lawmakers in Columbus or Washington D.C., the governor of Ohio, or even the president. The students will be anxious to hear back I'm sure.

Language Arts:

  • Reading-This week we will continue summarizing nonfiction texts and exploring content from Theme 9 (Native Americans).
  • Writing-Students will begin their first opinion writing piece this week (issues of water found on Earth). Check out your child's work so far and chosen topics on Google Classroom ELA.

Science-We will begin our mini landforms unit this week in our new science stations.

Weekly Update 11/5-11/9

Math: This week we turn our attention to division. We begin with mostly 2-digit numbers divided by a 1-digit number, though we dabble in 3-digit by 1-digit too. The students will treat these as multiplication problems with a missing factor for the most part. For example, 84 divided by 6 we think of ? x 6 = 84. They will start with what they know, like 11 x 6 = 66 (we call that taking a giant leap for mathkind) and count up from there. They will learn division strategies later in the year. And since we are starting division, our fact fluency Fridays will now be division facts. So instead of 5 x 7 = 35, it will now be 35 divided by 7 = ?. Don't forget there is a link to a Mad Minute practice site on the math page of this blog.

Social Studies: We will finish typing our opinion paragraph on Issue 33 on Monday. Then we will dive into learning about the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The students will need to know the 5 freedoms that are contained in the First Amendment (freedoms of religion, speech, press, assembly, and petition the government) and what they mean.

Language Arts:

  • Reading-This week we will finish identifying main idea and details in nonfiction texts/summarizing information. We will also begin Theme 9 (Native Americans).
  • Writing-Students will finish writing their passion paragraphs this week and begin their first opinion piece (issues of water found on Earth). Check out your child's work so far and chosen topics on Google Classroom ELA.
  • Language-This week we will continue working through Unit 4 (alternate "o" and plural review). See our added Unit 4 Spelling City link below. We will also finish up our Comma Unit this week. There are practice links already on our Google Classroom for your child to practice.

Science-We will begin discussing slow changes of the Earth's surface (weathering, erosion, deposition) this week and landforms.

Weekly Update 10/29-11/2

Math: This week we jump into Unit 3 by learning how to solve 2-digit by 1-digit multiplication problems by breaking the 2-digit number into two smaller parts in order to solve the problem. For example, we can take 27 x 4 and turn it into (20 x 4) + (7 x 4). We should be ready for some division by the end of the week.

Social Studies: This week we will be experiencing the importance of being an informed voter by discussing Issue 33, which affects voters in Symmes Township. We will discuss both sides of the argument before the students will decide if they are in favor of Issue 33 or not. To practice their writing skills, we will turn their choice into an opinion writing piece which they will be bringing home on Thursday for you to proofread. So look for that to come home. They will type their final copy in class on Friday.

Language Arts:

  • Reading-This week we I will pull texts for students to read relating to Earth Science and slow changes of the Earth (weathering, erosion, deposition). Students can be preparing for the test by completing the three assignments out on Freckle. The next unit we will dive into next is Unit 3, which consists of multiplication (2-digit by 1-digit and 2-digit by 2-digit) and division (2-digit by 1-digit), so keep working on those multiplication facts!

Social Studies: To wrap up our study of geography (map skills, natural resources, transportation, changes to the environment, and changing populations) students will take a short assessment on Friday. A study guide will come home on Monday to help them prepare. Please don't worry about the assessment too much because it only consists of 8 questions. So don't expect your child to memorize every fact on the study guide word for word. However, this will be a good chance for them to learn how to prepare for a test. In between we will begin focusing on our government unit. We will first learn about the rights and responsibilities of U.S. citizens followed by a discussion about how to make an informed decision when it comes to voting. The students will actually get the chance to vote on some issues on Thursday. You'll have to ask them what they learned about voting after that.

Then we will discuss the attributes of different polygons (types of angles, number of sides, parallel sides, etc.). This will lead us to a game that we play in class where they have to pick a couple of polygons that fit a certain rule or have something in common and their partner has to try to guess what their rule was. We will finish the week by reviewing some math skills through some holiday related math situations. You'll have to ask them at the end of the week how much it costs to buy everything from the song, The Twelve Days of Christmas.

Social Studies: We will continue to gather information about the tribe they picked to research last week. By midweek they will be able to create a visual in class to compare and contrast their historic tribe to one group of Ohio's prehistoric people. Maybe by the end of the week we will be able to start working on the in-class project to show what they learned about the groups they researched. More details to follow soon.
