Volunteer

At this point in time, we are supported by volunteers from the congregations of our founding six churches (Christ Church Episcopal Parish, Lake Grove Presbyterian Church, Lake Oswego United Church of Christ, Lake Oswego United Methodist Church, Our Lady of the Lake Parish, and River West Church).

If your home church is one of those listed, please reach out to the board representative of your church at their email below. Review the descriptions of our five types of volunteer teams.

Thank you for your interest in serving our guest families!

Family Support

The family support team serves as the guest families’ point of contact for the duration of their stay with LOTSM, providing appropriate help upon request.  We maintain contact and offer support to guest families, and we work closely to communicate with the team and the Clackamas County Housing Case Manager. The key is to ensure continuity of support in meeting guest families’ needs.

We can provide transportation for moving, shopping, appointments, classes, or emergencies. We can also help with childcare and providing enrichment experiences for the children. Our goal is to support the family, even if the need is for training in something like cooking skills. Sometimes it's sufficient just to be present - to show a caring heart and to help provide resources at a time of need. A case manager from Clackamas County Social Services provides assistance with goal-setting, housekeeping skills, life skills, budgeting, etc.

Apartments and Maintenance

The apartments and maintenance team coordinates apartment turnovers and ongoing maintenance support.  There are 7-8 turnovers per year, with a typical duration of 1-2 weeks.

The maintenance team inspects the apartment and complete or arrange for needed repairs.  They ensure that all safety equipment is in good working order and batteries replaced.  When needed for a new family, they will equip the apartment with age-appropriate child safety items (outlet covers, drawer and cabinet locks etc). The maintenance team responds when facility issues are reported by the family support team while guests are in residence, making arrangements for repair or replacement.

Training

The training team oversees orientation, training on policy & procedure, and ongoing development of volunteers and board members. They conduct or arrange for training on the following topics: orientation (LOTSM history/ overview, policies), new policies or procedures, overall training refresh, and tends or resources for people who need housing and support services. The training team also coordinates our volunteer appreciation, e.g., in-person gathering, thank you notes.

Finance

The purpose of the finance team is to oversee the financial health and integrity of the corporation in conjunction with the Board Treasurer. They assist with reconciling the monthly bank statements monthly.

The team will also be in charge of arranging internal or external financial review every 3-5 years. Members also oversee development of annual budget, with input from team leaders. If any grants are awarded, they coordinate grant applications & required reporting to grantors.

Communications

The communications team works to develop and maintain LOTSM’s means of internal and external communications, ensuring protection of confidential information. They may need to update and maintain the public LOTSM website, protecting confidential information. They develop and update marketing materials used for recruiting volunteers, grant applications, and presentations. Members might need to manage relations with local media, to increase community awareness of the needs of families in crisis.
