The Life Lab is a 1/2 acre outdoor classroom for teaching elementary-age students about life sciences through gardening, experimentation, exploration and so much more. We are located at Green Acres Elementary School in Santa Cruz, CA. 🌱
... our Life Lab was the first outdoor science classroom of its kind? (We're really proud of that).Â
Created in 1978 by a group of enterprising teachers, a simple field next to the school became a novel way to teach students about the magic of life sciences through a fun, multi-sensory experience. Â
Today, the original Life Lab is in full operation, serving students every day of the school week. Thanks to many hours of hard work by volunteers and staff, over time we have renovated our beloved outdoor space -- with plans to make it better than ever!
Like many public institutions, the Life Lab runs on a limited budget. But you can help!
Much of the work in our 1/2 acre garden can't get done without the help of community members. We have volunteer events on select weekends of the month.
We have an ongoing need for various supplies:
Garden soil
Mulch material, wood chips, straw, etc.
Seed (preferably heirloom; not from store-bought fruits/veggies)
Compost or vermicompost
Starter plants
Fruiting trees/shrubs
Fertilizer (preferably organic)
Hand tools: shovel, rake, hoe, trowel, etc.
Machine tools: chainsaw, trimmer, etc.
Cordless tools: drill, saw, etc.
Wheelbarrows
Large pieces of cardboard for weed block
Drip irrigation tubing and supplies
Lumber, for large projects
Wood scraps, for small projects
Construction screws
Landscape staples
