OTHER: We will also work on some "in class" assignments. If students are absent or do not finish in the time allotted, they may have to complete those assignments at home.
This page is offered as a courtesy, and I do my best to update it for the week by the time students get home from school on Mondays. Please understand that assignments are also posted on the "Assignments" board each day in the classroom, and students are given time EVERY day to write the assignments down in their Minder Binders. Additionally, students are given class time to begin (and often finish) each assignment during class. If students appear overwhelmed with homework from my class, please reach out to me so we can discuss discuss the issue and find solutions.
Students must have a silent reading book in class EVERY day (for the entire year). Ideally, this would be a fiction book the student has not read before.
Independent Reading - On Tue., 8/28, students will get a tour of our Media Center and will be encouraged to check out a book for our first Independent Reading Assignment. On 8/28, students will be given the requirements for Independent Reading Book #1. They are asked to obtain a parent signature on the requirements form and have a book that meets the requirements in class by Fri., 8/30. The book and a R.E.A.D. form (attached to the requirements form) will need to be completed by Thur., 9/26. On that day, there will be an assessment that will require references from their book, so they should have the book in class to use during the assessment. Note: Students will be given a R.E.A.D. form, but additional copies can be printed from the homepage of our Google Classroom page.
Daily Language Review (DLR) #2 is due Tue. - Fri. This is a daily assignment (that should take less than five minutes each day). Students need to complete "Monday" by Tuesday, "Tuesday" by Wednesday, "Wednesday" by Thursday, and "Thursday" by Friday. We go over the answers each day, and students are responsible for correcting their mistakes. Students can easily earn a 100% each week on this assignment by correcting any mistakes they made when we go over the answers. It will be collected on Friday, graded over the weekend, and returned to students the following Monday. There will be a short quiz (3-4 questions) on the related concepts on the Friday after it's handed back.
DLR Quiz #1 will be on Fri., 8/30.
There was a "No Excuse Words" Pre-test in class on Tue., 8/21. We reviewed the words and rules for these words following the test, and there will be a final test on these words on Thur., 8/29. Following the test, students will be expected to spell these words correctly in ALL Core assignments. NOTE: Students have a copy of the No Excuse Words, and they are also posted under "Week #2" in Google Classroom.
No Red Ink (an online grammar program - there is a link to the site under "Classwork" on Google Classroom): On Fri., 8/23, students were assigned "Commonly Confused Words #1." This assignment is due on Fri., 8/30. There will also be a quiz on these words during class on Fri., 8/30.
Prepositions Unit: On Thur., 8/29, we will begin studying prepositions.
Notes and a song will be given to students and reviewed 8/29. We will practice the song often in class, and students should memorize it.

Ideally, this would be a fiction book the student has not read before.
