Under construction: Thank you for your patience as we gather details for our brand new program! We are so excited to have you join us on our first ever trip to Tulum! The general information below is correct and all details marked "Coming soon" will be filled in as information is sent to the Admissions Team.
Get ready for an unforgettable experience as you build your skills in animal care, focusing on monitoring and assessment! You'll have the chance to help the Maya Animal Alliance run a two-day sterilization clinic for local dogs. You’ll also learn the ins and outs of running a pop-up health clinic for cats and dogs, including organizing patients, safe handling, providing assessments, and collecting health data. You'll dive into common health issues in the area, vaccines, preventative care, and monitoring patients during and after surgery, all while communicating with pet owners. Plus, you’ll snorkel with sea turtles and soak up the beauty of the ocean.
This page will take you through everything you need to know about your program. You should READ every section. We've linked additional information under each topic as needed.
Students will be staying at the Color Box Hotel. Students will have shared room with students of the same gender with ensuite bathrooms. There is a pool at the hotel!
Meals will be local style foods, with lots of rice and beans. Please note not all meals are included in your tuition.
At the start of your program, our group shuttle from the airport on arrival on Wednesday will leave the airport at 5pm. Therefore, you should plan to arrive on a flight that arrives at CUN between 12- 3pm on Wednesday. Please note you may need to wait a few hours at a restaurant near the airport for a small group of students to have gathered and then be picked up. There are no planned activities on arrival day so you will need to stay at the student housing until the welcome dinner.
At the end of your program, our group shuttle to the airport on departure Wednesday will arrive at the airport at 11am. Therefore, you should plan to depart on a flight that departs CUN after 1pm on Wednesday.
The only items you are required to bring are those on the “required” lists. General required items (like your passport) are found on the ALL PROGRAMS packing list above. Program specific required items are found below under the REQUIRED section. For the rest of the items, you are welcome to use your discretion. There may be items missing from this list that you’d like to bring, and there may be items on this list that you don’t want to bring. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask!
2-3 pairs of scrubs
Closed-toe shoes for the clinic (sneakers)
Rashguard (to protect you from the sun. You can leave the tags on them to return if not used)
Adequate supply of reef safe sunscreen (without oxybenzone, octinoxate, or nano-minerals)
At least 1 bathing suit. Please be sure to bring a practical bathing suit (ie, not a strappy bikini).
Clothes that can get dirty (very lightweight clothes)
Mosquito repellent
Water shoes or sandals with a strap (similar to Teva, Chaco or Keen)
Stethoscope (Not required, but you may prefer to have your own, and it will come in handy in your future with vet med. This is a good, affordable stethoscope option)
Hat or cap (for sun)
WIFI: Students will have WiFi at the housing locations, but the WiFi is not reliable. If you are interested in a travel phone plan, please talk to your phone provider before your program starts.
Bedding: We will provide you with sheets, pillows and blankets.
Towels: Towels are provided, but wash rags are not. We recommend bringing a luffa to use multiple times
Laundry: Laundry is available on-site at your own cost. Coin-operated only and is $2 per load.
Outlets: You will not need an adapter- outlets will be the same as in the US.
Dress Code: Mexico can get very hot, we suggest wearing light weight close that can get dirty. Students will be required to wear scrubs and closed-toe shoes during clinic days.
Money: Most students spend around $200 USD on a two-week program. You’ll likely want to buy things like souvenirs, laundry, snacks or drinks. So you don’t NEED any money, but you’ll want to bring enough that you can buy some things to bring home. We HIGHLY recommend contacting your bank and ordering Pesos before leaving for the program. There will be an ATM where students can withdraw money, and there is an ATM transaction fee each time.
