Center for Engaged Learning Abroad (CELA-Belize)
CELA requires that all students have medical insurance that covers them during their time abroad. If you do not have a plan that covers your time in Belize, you can purchase travel medical insurance.
Here is what CELA suggests if you are using travel medical insurance to meet your CELA medical insurance requirements:
$50,000 in primary medical coverage
At least $1 million in medical evacuation coverage
A zero-dollar deductible
We recommend Squaremouth.com, an insurance aggregator that lets you compare prices for travel insurance. We like them because of their competitive pricing and great customer service. They have a 100% satisfaction guarantee, so if you are having trouble with your insurance provider, they will work with you to communicate with the provider.
You are not required to purchase travel medical insurance from Squaremouth.
Keep in mind that trip cancellation coverage will increase the price of your plan a lot, and is not required by CELA.
To use Squaremouth.com, click the link below and fill out your information. On the left-hand side of the page, you can set filters to only see policies that meet CELA requirements.
Click Emergency Medical and choose $50,000 or more
Click Medical Evacuation and choose $1,000,000 or more
Look at the policy results. On the right, next to the price, click where it says "Policy Detail"
In the window that pops up, scroll down to the Medical section
Next to Medical Deductible, click Select Options
Under Medical Deductions, choose $0 per occurrence (this will cause the price to rise slightly from the estimate you just saw)
Click Buy Now, and Continue to Purchase
You should note that coverage is limited for pre-existing conditions and activities such as rafting and ziplining are not covered.
This is travel medical insurance--it does not cover everything that might happen when you are traveling. Travel insurance is separate and not required by CELA. If you wish to purchase travel insurance to cover things like lost or damaged luggage, you can do so on Squaremouth as well.
