How do I know if my child is eligible for the Summer Remediation Program?
If your child earned a grade of 64 or lower in a core course, such as English, Math, Science, Social Studies, Physical Education, then your child is eligible to register for the program.
Why would I want my child to participate in this program?
Your child will retake the course content and, with a passing score, earn course credit, thus recouping course credit while strengthening skills for the future. Furthermore, if your child remains credit deficient, your child increases his/her chance of not graduating within cohort.
Can I pick which session my child enrolls in at the time of registration?
Unfortunately, sessions and courses offered will be determined by enrollment and staffing. Should both sessions run and offer the same course, as long as there are seats open, you can work with the program principal and facilitator to determine if a change can be made. We will do our best to accommodate changes whenever possible.
When will I know if my child is enrolled?
We anticipate having courses in PowerSchool by June 30th. If there are changes to this time frame, notice will be posted on the high school homepage and under this header.
How can I see my child's summer schedule? The PowerSchool app cannot display summer schedules. In order to access a child's schedule, open a browser, go to Longwood's home page, click on parents, click on the Parent Portal, click on the Parent Portal Log In, Click on My Schedule (left side of the page) and click on the Current Year Schedule tab. Your child's schedule will display. You can see what session your child's classes are in under the column labeled "Trm". S1 represents session one and S2 represents session two. There are only three periods per day, per session. Based on your child's needs they may have classes in S1 or S2 or both sessions S1 and S2. Students are to report to the high school, in person, on Tuesday, July 5th for the first day of class. Students should check their school email for communications with teachers. Students who miss more than 2 classes will not earn credit for the course and will be dropped from the course(s).
What is an School, Community and Self Course or Cooperative Learning and Leadership (SEL) courses?
These courses are designed to address social emotional learning. The content of the courses will be centered around self awareness, self control, interpersonal skills and emotional learning and team development.
Can my child miss any classes?
Due to the short duration of the program, only two excused absences can be permitted. Attendance will be recorded in PowerSchool.
Will you be offering remote or distance classes?
No. One of the goals of the program is to re acclimate students to school and have students build rapport with faculty and staff.
Will there be transportation?
Yes. There is a 16 bus run daily for pick up and drop off. The routes can be found on this site on the Transportation page. You can drive your child to school, if you prefer. Only students who had a parking pass for the 2020-2021 school year may drive and park on campus in the student lot during the Summer Remediation Program.
Will there be food?
Yes. A grab and go breakfast and lunch will be offered. We strongly recommend that students bring a water bottle to the program each day.
Will my child have a locker?
No. Since it is an abbreviated day, students will not have a locker assigned.
What materials does my child need?
Teachers may inform you what your child will need. The goal is to keep it simple: pen, pencil, calculator, notebook(s). Your child's teacher may also suggest a towel or comfortable shoes. One of the goals of the program is to incorporate wellness and mindfulness into the day. Classes will be scheduled two hour blocks. Students should bring a refillable water bottle. Students may have time to read outdoors or go for a walk, weather permitting. All activities will be under the supervision of a faculty or staff member.
What if my child takes medication?
Just like the school year, all medication should be dropped off at the Nurses' Office for storage and distribution.
What if my child breaks a rule?
Similar to the school year, all students must abide by the District's Code of Conduct. Discipline will be rendered for any infraction of the Code of Conduct. Discipline will align with the high school's standard disciplinary practices.
Who can I call with questions?
Your child's counselor will be in available until the end of June. After July 1st, you should direct questions to the program's facilitators, Ms. Jessica Gartland, Mr. Aden Smith, or the Principal, Mr. Larry Collins. Their contact information can be found at the top of this page.
Who else is involved in the program besides teachers?
There will be social workers, school counselors, security staff, food service workers, clerical support, a nurse and a librarian.
What if I need to pick up my child early or drop him/her off late due to a medical appointment or legal obligation?
Please contact the program facilitator's office . Either the facilitator or support staff will be able to assist you in making arrangements. Please keep in mind, that absences from any course beyond a total of two will prohibit your child from earning course credit, regardless of his/her course grades/assessments.
Will my child have to wear a mask?
Masks are no longer required in the school setting, but are up to discretion of each individual.
Can I drop food off for my child?
No, students can bring a bagged lunch or receive breakfast and lunch from the school cafeteria.
