Composure is the ability to control your actions even with feeling all the feelings. This is a very complicated skill and depends on children's emotion regulation. The process of emotion regulation starts as an infant or perhaps even in utero. There are a lots of great resources out there for parents on how to teach these very important skills.
Make sure you have a plan for when feelings get overwhelming. What helps you go from upset to calm? Don't forget BREATHING!! At CVG we look at discipline as consciously teaching students how to work together in community following the SUNS expectations. Conscious Discipline resources have helped us shift our practices to both hold students accountable and teach them needed skills for safety and connection. It is an adult first practice where adults need to model composure in order to help the child learn how to regulate.
