The LongMetal Summer Robotics Experience
Our program is designed around FIRST LEGO League, a competitive robotics program designed to use collaboration and competition to excite kids about STEM robotics. We actually have a competition at the end of the week. Lastly, our program is a fundraiser for our non-profit organization that is directly tied to the school.

Are you preparing for the SAT Math test? Here’s your chance to get some summer practice done while also getting personalized feedback on your work! In this enrichment course, students will improve their understanding of what to expect on the math sections of the test, learn test-taking strategies, and get personalized practice recommendations based on their performance on practice tests. Students will utilize the College Board’s Blue Book app, Khan Academy, Delta Math, and Desmos. Students will have ample time to practice, ask questions, practice, get feedback, and PRACTICE!

KIDS ONLY: STEM & Play: The Ultimate Summer Challenge! (Entering Grades K-4) $195
Get ready for a week (or two… or three!) packed with creativity, friendly competition, and hands-on fun! In this high-energy program, kids can join for one, two, or all three weeks of action as they take on daily challenges like Army Men Bowling, Straw Bridge Building, Marshmallow Towers, and more. Each activity is designed to spark curiosity and build real-world skills in science, engineering, writing, and problem-solving—all while having an absolute blast. With daily prizes, games, and surprise scavenger hunts, this is the summer adventure your child won’t stop talking about! A materials fee of $25 is payable to the instructor on the first day.

Elementary Book Club: Entering Grades K-5 $100
Students will be read aloud a series of books (3-5 depending on time) with one central theme (ie. food, friendship, summer, pets, school). Books will be discussed as a group pointing out similar themes, favorite parts, characters, etc. Next, students will participate in a fun movement activity along the same theme as the chosen books. Finally class will end with a drawing activity, each student will be asked to draw their favorite moment from one of the books read and as to not rush any students, they can finish after the allotted class time and drawings will be shared the following class.

Nature Secrets (Entering grades K-5) $100
In Natures' Secrets, students in kindergarten through 5th grade will explore the wonders of nature—going on a short nature walk and learning facts about plants, animals, ecosystems, and more. From discovering the roles of acorns, leaves, and pinecones, to understanding how animals use natural materials for shelter, students will gain an appreciation for the world around them.
Each session will feature a nature-themed lesson, followed by a creative crafting activity. Students will gather natural items like leaves, twigs, acorns, and seeds, and use them to make wonderful crafts, from leaf rubbings to pinecone animals. This course encourages creativity, and curiosity, while inspiring a deeper connection with the environment. Instructor: K. Kennedy

Mindfulness and Playful (Entering grades K-5)
This course will incorporate mindfulness and playtime! We will begin each session with a mindfulness practice, including guided meditation, calming movement breaks and breathing techniques for calm bodies. We will then have playtime where we will play a variety of games including board games, cooperative games and individual choice-including blocks, magnatiles, drawing, and legos. We will end each session with a read aloud around mindfulness. Instructor: L. Georgantas

Creative Scrapbooking (Entering Grades 2-6) $100
Welcome to the world of creative scrapbooking! In this engaging course, students in grades 2 through 6 will embark on a journey of artistic expression, storytelling, and creativity through the craft of scrapbooking. From preserving cherished memories to exploring imaginative themes, students will learn the fundamentals of scrapbooking while honing their fine motor skills, creativity, and attention to detail.
Throughout the course, students will be introduced to various techniques, tools, and materials essential for creating captivating scrapbook layouts. They will experiment with different paper textures, embellishments, stickers, stamps, and more to add depth and personality to their projects.
By the end of the course, students will have created a collection of unique scrapbook pages showcasing their favorite memories, experiences, and aspirations. Please print out pictures to bring to the class. With your $20 materials fee, you will receive a small scrapbook, pages, stickers, and scrapbook tape.

Write To Art: (Entering grades 3-5) $100
This class has been cancelled.
This course is designed to help 3rd-5th grade students have fun while developing their fine motor skills and handwriting techniques by focusing on cursive writing, art, and a little bit of calligraphy. Students will learn cursive writing, including the proper formation of letters. In addition to cursive writing, students will explore the art of calligraphy. To enhance their artistic skills, students will create original works of art using calligraphy and cursive writing. They will experiment with different mediums, such as watercolor, acrylic, and ink, to add color and texture to their pieces. A $12 material fee will cover a binder and calligraphy pen set. DIY Creations: (Entering grades 2-6) $100
In this DIY (Do-It-Yourself) summer class, you will create something new each day—everything from making colorful slime and decorating rocks to crafting paper flowers, friendship bracelets, bean mosaics, duct tape wallets, and even paper bag kites. This class is perfect for students who love to create, imagine, and get a little messy. A materials fee of $20 is payable to the instructor on the first day. Instructor: S. Udell

Watercolor painting, Folding, Constructing!
During the week-long 2 hour art workshop students would create their own unique and colorful bouquet of flowers and butterflies using a variety of art materials including watercolor, sculpting wire, coffee filters and more. Instructor: C. Dembkowski

Intro to Crochet (entering grades 3-6) $100
Does the art of crochet seem like a far reach for you or your young one? Do the videos you watch do nothing but confuse you? I am here to help! Little hands may start slow but learning the rhythm of crocheting can be a skill they have for years to come! This course will supply the students with a skein of yarn and a hook to begin and basic single stitch will be taught. Do you have a social butterfly at home? Do you have a social caterpillar that needs help becoming that social butterfly? Either way, this is the club for them! Each day we will learn the rules and play a different card based game! The children will break into groups or we will all play together but they will leave each day having a new knowledge (and love!) for a game that can be played with family and friends!

Super Science (Entering grades K-3) $100
In this course students will explore science through various fun and engaging science experiments. They will learn the science of what makes the experiment work. Students will get the opportunity to participate in a variety of experiments that they can recreate at home with their families.

Writing and Storytelling!
Become a Better Writer: (Entering Grades 6-9) $100
This class has been cancelled.
When you receive a writing assignment, do you struggle with where to begin or how to organize your ideas? If so, this class will help you to develop coherent and organized essays and narratives. In addition to learning how to develop a thesis statement, organize your ideas, and use transitions, you will practice great techniques for writing introductions and conclusions. For narrative writing, you'll learn to use hooks to cliffhangers that engage readers and tell great stories! Get ready to go back to school with the tools you need to tackle all of your writing assignments.

Creative Writing (Entering grades 7-12) $100
Creative writing is a process of exploration and discovery. This Creative Writing Workshop offers an opportunity for eager and motivated students to investigate ideas and reflect on their experiences. Students will be challenged in both fiction and nonfiction, through short stories, nonfiction narratives, and poems, to produce work that will be critiqued by the teacher with the aims of developing their skills in written expression and creating tools for critical evaluation of their writing. Students’ work will also be shared with the class in small groups where methods for constructive criticism will be developed and applied. In the small-group writing workshops, personal attention will be given to each student. In addition, we’ll read excerpts from exemplary writers and poets. The aim is to become more insightful writers, more perceptive readers, more confident students, and become even more excited about writing!

- Greater motivation and confidence about writing, and greater enjoyment

Fiction/Poetry Workshop (entering grades 6-12) $100
Whether Fiction or Poetry, writing workshops are a place to share art you've made and build critical social and writing skills. You'll bring a short story or a poem you've written outside class to share with others, and read work from your classmates. From being vulnerable and engaging with constructive criticism, to sharing meaningful feedback with others to help build them up, writing workshops are a place to learn & grow as an artist and as a person. Personal Narrative Storytelling: Learn How To Tell Your Story Entering Grades 8 - 12 $100

This is an opportunity for students to come together and use reflective practices. The session will include activities such as journaling, being outside in nature, stretching and meditation. We will also use a group setting for connection and unity building. We will look at ways to manage stress and find ways to keep life's challenging events in perspective. Do you like the sweet victory of knocking out opponents in knock-out board games? Do you think your mulit-player card game sense of humor can't be topped? Well, forget Sorry and Apples to Apples! We will be playing new versions of old favorites. Combine fun and enrichment through games based on middle school mathematical concepts! Students will compete, collaborate, and debate as they learn the rules to new games that require them to think mathematically and strategically. They will develop fluency with number systems; ratio and proportional relationships; expressions and equations, statistics and probability; and patterns, graphs, and functions. Studio Production (Entering grades 6-12) $100
Using state-of-the-art music technology lab at Longmeadow High School and Logic Pro X, summer studio production will explore the basics of digital music creation, composition, and production. Working individually on digital songs, students will acquire the necessary skills to produce their own album by the end of the week. Production techniques explored include sampling, mixing, automating, synthesizing and balancing. No existing musical ability necessary!

Intro to Band (Entering grades 6-7) $100
For students with 0-1 years of band experience
This course is designed for students with less than one year of experience in a scholastic band program. For students with over 1 year of band experience
This course is designed for students with over one year of experience in a scholastic band program. Summer Band curriculum will include a review of wind and percussion playing fundamentals, basic music literacy, and ensemble playing. A fee of $15 for a T-shirt payable to the instructor is due on the first day. The program will conclude with a concert on Friday afternoon.

String Instrument Instruction!
Intro to Strings: Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass (entering grades 3-6). $100
Intro to Strings is open to anyone who would like to learn a string instrument or try out a different string instrument. We will learn how to hold our instruments and our bows and play easy folk songs. The goal of this class is to give you the tools to progress on your own for the rest of the summer if you want. We will end the week with a concert on Friday afternoon. A $15 t-shirt fee, payable to the instructor, will be collected on the first day of class.

String Orchestra is for students who have 1 - 3 years of study on their string instrument and are looking to play more music. Advanced Orchestra is for students who have 3 and more years of study on their string instrument and/or have finished Suzuki Book 3 or prior approval of the instructor. More advanced instrumentalists are welcome to join for the playing and potentially section leader experience. We will prepare medium level fun songs to perform for a concert on Friday afternoon. Pitch Perfect (entering grades 5-9)

Pitch Perfect - An a cappella camp for rising 5th-9th graders. We'll develop our singing and musicianship skills as we learn songs together. By the end of the week we will invite family and friends to hear us sing. Taught by Longmeadow Public Schools Music Coordinator Emma Forest and Williams Middle School Choral/General Music Teacher Erin Hanson, assisted by outstanding LHS vocalists. (Note: Students who have participated previously are encouraged to sign up again. The music and personnel will be different.) College Prep!
Verbal SAT (Entering grades 10-12) $100
This course offers both an introduction to the SAT verbal sections and an opportunity for further practice. Students will gain an understanding for what to expect on the reading & writing sections of the test and be given ample opportunity to engage in practice. Test strategies will be covered. Students will gain confidence in knowing what will be asked of them on the actual test day as the test is broken down in parts and demystified. Ample time for questions and review will be provided.

The College Essay (Entering grades 10-12) $100
Learn personal essay writing from an experienced writing instructor. Focus will be on producing 1-2 polished personal essays, one of which may serve as an essay for college admission. Students will learn to write with voice and purpose, with a large emphasis placed on the revision process. Students will be impressed by how much a draft can improve over the course of a single week.

It’s BACK! The LongMetal Summer Robotics Experience
Experience the thrill of competitive robotics! Learn real-world engineering and coding skills and compete for the coveted LongMetal Summer Program Trophy!
Learn robotics from the Longmeadow High School’s Award-Winning FIRST Robotics team, LongMetal. Led by experienced high school engineers, participants will break off into teams to design, build and program their robots to compete for glory. Students will gain skills in engineering, creative problem solving, leadership and team building as they work to compete on a table-top playing field of complex and fun engineering challenges.
Consider LongMetal Summer Robotics as an entry into the world of competitive robotics and a starter program for your own FIRST LEGO League team.
Proceeds of this program will benefit Longmeadow High School’s Team LongMetal.
