The LongMetal Summer Robotics Experience 

Our program is designed around FIRST LEGO League, a competitive robotics program designed to use collaboration and competition to excite kids about STEM robotics. We actually have a competition at the end of the week. Lastly, our program is a fundraiser for our non-profit organization that is directly tied to the school.

PSI Lego Robotics Summer Camps Flyer

PSI is an organization that emphasizes fun, "hands-on" student-centered approaches that deliver elevated science learning. All of these programs are a great way for girls and boys to learn & strengthen their understanding of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) concepts set forth by Massachusetts core standards. Best of all, they get to use their imagination, explore their interests, and learn to approach problems logically and systematically!

Elementary Book Club: Entering Grades K-5 $95

Students will be read aloud a series of books (3-5 depending on time) with one central theme  (ie. food, friendship, summer, pets, school).  Books will be discussed as a group pointing out similar themes, favorite parts, characters, etc.  Next, students will participate in a fun movement activity along the same theme as the chosen books.  Finally class will end with a drawing activity, each student will be asked to draw their favorite moment from one of the books read and as to not rush any students, they can finish after the allotted class time and drawings will be shared the following class.

Are you allergic to glitter? Do you think pink should be outlawed? If you said yes, then this is the class for you! We want to delve into the disgusting and slide into the sticky. If you aren’t getting dirty, you aren’t doing it right! We will make a bridge of straws to hold the maximum amount of weight. We will try to make the highest and strongest tower out of marshmallows and toothpicks and use trial and error to play action figure bowling with various spheres! In addition, we will also make a string maze, a straw bridge, play capture the flag, and build creations with pipe cleaners and tin foil! An additional materials fee of $20 is required, payable to the instructor on the first day of the course.

Kids in the Kitchen - Simple Snacks: Entering Grades 2-5 $95

Learn how to make simple snacks that you can eat anytime!  This all-new recipe collection is designed to help little chefs learn how to prepare and cook healthy, tasty snacks or mini-meals in a creative and fun way!  We will incorporate games and activities to empower and inspire our kids to lead healthier lives.  Each student will create a cookbook with all of the recipes used in class. A $20 materials fee is required, payable to the instructor on the first day of class.

The S.T.E.A.M summer fun enrichment program will offer children the chance to learn, grow, and explore new modes of thinking and doing. The S.T.E.A.M summer fun enrichment program can not only boost academic performance during the school year, it can also build confidence, creativity, resiliency, and it will be fun! Each day will have a different theme with an activity focused in science, technology, engineering, art or mathematics! A $10 materials fee, payable to the instructor, is due on the first day.

Legos!


Books and Bricks: Entering Grades 1-4 $95


Welcome to Books and Bricks - where we'll combine the joy of reading with the excitement of building with Lego! Each time we meet, we'll read a new story together, chosen from some of the most beloved children's books. From classics to modern favorites, we'll explore a range of stories and characters that will inspire imaginations.

After each story, we'll break out the Lego bricks and get to building! With each new story, we'll challenge you to build something inspired by the characters, setting, or theme of the book. You might build a castle, a spaceship, a magical creature, or anything else that sparks your creativity.

Building with Legos is not only fun, it's a great way to develop spatial reasoning, problem-solving, and fine motor skills. This fun format will let students bring stories to life in a whole new way, as they create their own three-dimensional interpretation of the books we read.

Exploring Art and Poetry (Entering Grades 3-6).

In this course, rising 3-6th graders will be combining visual art with the magic of poetry. Throughout this interactive course, students will explore painting, drawing, and collaging while developing their poetic voice.

Every day the group would play various games: Win it in a minute, or other silly games! These would promote laughter, smiles, cooperation, and just good fun! An additional materials fee of $10 is required, payable to the instructor on the first day of the course.

Collage Art Workshop (Entering Grades 2-6) $95

Do you love exploring different ways to make art?  In this art workshop we will make our own colorful paper with stamps, ink, and paint.  We will then transform our colorful creations to make our beautiful collage artwork.   A $20 materials fee is required, payable to the instructor on the first day of class. Paper Marbling Art Workshop (Entering Grades 5-8) $95

This art workshop will introduce you to the art of paper marbling and stamp making.  We will learn about a Japanese paper marbling process called Suminagashi, which translates to “floating ink.”  You will make one-of-a-kind marbled prints that can be used to create new works of art or enjoy on their own.  Each student will leave the class with marbled paper and creative ideas of how to use it!  A $25 materials fee is required, payable to the instructor on the first day of class.

Super Science (Entering grades K-3) $95

In this course students will explore science through various fun and engaging science experiments. They will learn the science of what makes the experiment work. Students will get the opportunity to participate in a variety of experiments that they can recreate at home with their families.

Creative Scrapbooking: (Entering Grades 2-6) $95


Welcome to the world of creative scrapbooking! In this engaging course, students in grades 2 through 6 will embark on a journey of artistic expression, storytelling, and creativity through the craft of scrapbooking. From preserving cherished memories to exploring imaginative themes, students will learn the fundamentals of scrapbooking while honing their fine motor skills, creativity, and attention to detail.

Throughout the course, students will be introduced to various techniques, tools, and materials essential for creating captivating scrapbook layouts. They will experiment with different paper textures, embellishments, stickers, stamps, and more to add depth and personality to their projects.

In addition to learning the technical aspects of scrapbooking, students will also develop their storytelling abilities as they narrate their experiences, adventures, and dreams through visual compositions. They will explore themes such as family, friendship, hobbies, holidays, and special occasions, learning how to arrange photos, captions, and decorative elements to convey their unique stories effectively.

Through hands-on activities and guided projects, students will:

Learn basic scrapbooking techniques, including cutting, pasting, layering, and arranging.

Explore various design principles such as balance, contrast, and focal points to create visually appealing layouts.

Experiment with different styles and themes to express their individual personalities and interests.

Develop organizational skills by sorting and categorizing photos, papers, and embellishments.

Cultivate patience and attention to detail while working on intricate designs and decorations.

Gain confidence in their creative abilities and celebrate their accomplishments in a supportive environment.

By the end of the course, students will have created a collection of unique scrapbook pages showcasing their favorite memories, experiences, and aspirations. Whether documenting a family vacation, celebrating a birthday, or simply expressing their creativity, students will leave this class with newfound skills and a deeper appreciation for the art of scrapbooking. Join us as we turn ordinary moments into extraordinary works of art!

Please print out pictures to bring to the class.   A $20 materials fee is required, payable to the instructor on the first day of class. With your materials fee, you will receive a small scrapbook, pages, stickers, and scrapbook tape.

Creative Upcycling: Building Together: (Entering Grades 2-6) $95


In this exciting enrichment course, second through sixth-grade students will unleash their creativity and environmental awareness through the art of upcycling. Upcycling involves taking old or discarded materials and transforming them into something new and useful. Students will learn how to repurpose materials in innovative ways, fostering a sense of sustainability and resourcefulness.

Throughout the course, students will have the opportunity to work both individually and collaboratively, honing their problem-solving skills and teamwork abilities. They will explore various upcycling techniques such as repainting, refurbishing, and redesigning items to give them new life and purpose.

Introduction to Upcycling: Understanding the concept of upcycling, its benefits for the environment, and examples of successful upcycling projects.

Creative Design Process: Learning how to brainstorm ideas, sketch designs, and plan upcycling projects effectively.

Material Exploration: Exploring a wide range of upcycling materials such as old clothing, cardboard, plastic bottles, and more, and understanding their potential for transformation. In addition to the ones provided, you may bring materials from your home.

Tools and Techniques: Mastering basic tools and techniques needed for upcycling, including cutting, painting, gluing, and sewing.

Project Execution: Putting ideas into action by creating upcycled items such as jewelry, home decor, toys, and functional objects.

Presentation and Showcase: Reflecting on the creative process, presenting finished projects, and participating in a showcase event where students can share their upcycled creations with peers and families. On the last day, family members may come to look at our creations for the last 20 minutes of class time. 

Through hands-on activities, guided instruction, and open-ended projects, students will develop critical thinking, innovation, and environmental consciousness. This course aims to inspire young minds to think creatively, problem-solve responsibly, and make a positive impact on the world around them through sustainable practices.  A $5 materials fee is required, payable to the instructor on the first day of class.

Healthy Habits: (Entering Grades K-3) $95


In this course students will learn healthy eating and exercising habits that they can use on a daily basis. The course will allow students to participate in making healthy snacks and enjoying them. They will also learn exercises they can take home and do on their own. This course will also give the students an opportunity to incorporate ELA skills and math skills by reading recipes and counting exercises. This course will be a fun and engaging way for children to develop healthy habits. Instructor: Brianna Georgantas

Become a Better Writer: (Entering Grades 6-9) $95


When you receive a writing assignment, do you struggle with where to begin or how to organize your ideas?  If so, this class will help you to develop coherent and organized essays and narratives.  In addition to learning how to develop a thesis statement, organize your ideas, and use transitions, you will practice great techniques for writing introductions and conclusions. For narrative writing, you'll learn to use hooks to cliffhangers that engage readers and tell great stories! Get ready to go back to school with the tools you need to tackle all of your writing assignments.

Rooted In Diversity: Branching Out With Wishtree Book Club (Entering grades 6-8) $95

Join us for a dynamic five-day journey through Wishtree by Katherine Applegate. Through discussions, fun activities, and creative writing, students will explore themes of friendship, diversity, and acceptance. Students will also share and discuss their favorite texts, fostering a love for reading and appreciation for diverse voices in literature. Join our book club for a week of exploration and inspiration!

Combine fun and enrichment through games based on middle school mathematical concepts! Students will compete, collaborate, and converse as they learn the rules to new games that require them to think mathematically and strategically. They will develop fluency with number systems; ratio and proportional relationships; expressions and equations, statistics and probability; and patterns, graphs, and functions.

Improvisational Comedy for Middle and High Schoolers (Entering grades 6-12) $95

Improvisational (improv) comedy is a form of performing art where the performers make up honest scenes and stories on the spot, without any scripts or plans. It’s like an exciting game where the actors have to think quickly, use their imaginations, and work together as a team to create real moments. It also turns out to be incredibly fun and funny! Improv comedy is different every time you do it. The performers rely on their improvisation skills to react and respond to unexpected situations. It’s all about being in the moment and trusting your instincts to come up with real reactions rooted in honesty that create memorable comedy. Improv comedy is not only entertaining, but it’s also a great way to learn how to think on your feet, be confident, and work as a team. Participants will walk away with an enhanced sense of well-being, and increased social and self-efficacy skills, and experience the amazing stress and anxiety-reduction benefits of practicing improvisational comedy. Studio Production (Entering grades 6-12) $95


Using state-of-the-art music technology lab at Longmeadow High School and Logic Pro X, summer studio production will explore the basics of digital music creation, composition, and production. Working individually on digital songs, students will acquire the necessary skills to produce their own album by the end of the week. Production techniques explored include sampling, mixing, automating, synthesizing and balancing. No existing musical ability necessary!

Intro to Band (Entering grades 6-7) $95

For students with 0-1 years of band experience 

 

This course is designed for students with less than one year of experience in a scholastic band program. Intro to Band curriculum will cover instrument assembly, instrument maintenance and care, basic tone production, and basic music literacy. The program will conclude with a concert on Friday afternoon. A $15 fee for t-shirts will be collected by the instructor on the first day.

Summer Band (Entering grades 7-9) $95

For students with over 1 year of band experience

 

This course is designed for students with over one year of experience in a scholastic band program. Summer Band curriculum will include a review of wind and percussion playing fundamentals, basic music literacy, and ensemble playing. A fee of $15 for a T-shirt payable to the instructor is due on the first day. The program will conclude with a concert on Friday afternoon.

String Instrument Instruction!


Intro to Strings: Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass (entering grades 3-6).      $95


Intro to Strings is open to anyone who would like to learn a string instrument or try out a different string instrument. We will learn how to hold our instruments and our bows and play easy folk songs. The goal of this class is to give you the tools to progress on your own for the rest of the summer if you want. We will end the week with a concert on Friday afternoon. A $15 t-shirt fee, payable to the instructor,  will be collected on the first day of class.

String Orchestra is for students who have 1 - 3 years of study on their string instrument and are looking to play more music. Advanced Orchestra (entering grades 7-10)

Advanced Orchestra is for students who have 3 and more years of study on their string instrument and/or have finished Suzuki Book 3 or prior approval of the instructor. More advanced instrumentalists are welcome to join for the playing and potentially section leader experience. We will prepare medium level fun songs to perform for a concert on Friday afternoon. A $15 fee for t-shirts will be collected by the instructor on the first day.

Pitch Perfect  (entering grades 5-9)

Pitch Perfect - An a cappella camp for rising 5th-9th graders. We'll develop our singing and musicianship skills as we learn songs together. By the end of the week we will invite family and friends to hear us sing. Taught by Longmeadow Public Schools Music Coordinator Kayla Werlin and Williams Middle School Choral/General Music Teacher Erin Hanson, assisted by outstanding LHS vocalists. (Note: Students who have participated previously are encouraged to sign up again. The music and personnel will be different.) Anatomical Drawing: Grades 3-12

Would you like to draw the human form using different tools and techniques? From portraitures to the full figure, you will generate a batch of drawings. This will help improve skills, such as how to embrace gestural marks, applying the value scale of white to black for highlights to shadows, find comfort with various materials, and make connections to the human anatomy. Monotype Printmaking: Grades 3-12

For this course, you will develop your skills in generating one-of-a-kind prints using different printmaking techniques and materials. For example, we will use the latest trend with gelli-plate printmaking! We will refer to some of the iconic styles and printmakers from the past to present as inspiration for these prints, too! Papier Mache: Grades 3-12

Want to build forms from a small to large scale? Build your architectural and prop-designing skills with the different paper mache processes that will be applied in various projects for this course! Instructor: M. Gross

Portfolio Development: Grades 9-12

In this 1-week course, participants will create a mini-portfolio of artwork that reflects the building of skills from 2-dimensional to 3-dimensional design, such as direct observational drawing to functional architectural vessels! Guides on how to curate the portfolio for future submission samples will be reviewed. Participants will have their artwork to take home, as well as have time to use their own devices to document photos of their work to use for their future (i.e.: college submission, personal website, etc.). Anatomical Sculpting: Grades 3-12

Drawing from Direct Observation (Entering Grades 6-12)


When reviewing portfolios, some art schools prefer to see at least one artwork done completely from direct observation. We will start by setting up a big still-life that will yield multiple interesting angles using objects that hold meaning for the students. The rest of the week will be spent fully developing an artwork of the still-life using the drawing or painting materials of your choice.  Instructor: B. Mitchell

Cyanotypes (Entering Grades 6-12)

In this 1 week course, we will explore cyanotype photography, a camera-less process that utilizes UV light to print images on coated paper and cloth. We will create images using found objects, organic materials, printed photographs, and drawings. We will also cover how to tone your cyanotype prints with various materials like coffee, tea, and borax. This simple yet versatile art-making process yields interesting results that can be combined with other techniques for mixed media works.  An additional materials fee of $10 is required, payable to the instructor on the first day of the course. Express Yourself! A Look at the Expressive Arts (Entering Grades 6-12)

Did you know Art is not just Visual? The 5 Expressive Arts are around us everywhere we go, in a constant cycle. In this course, Students will learn about all 5 Art forms (Visual, Music, Writing, theater, Movement). Each day students will get to learn about the art form, see examples, and finally, try it out themselves! See for yourself the mental, physical and emotional benefits of practicing the expressive arts. Classes will be jam packed with demonstrations, hands-on activities, and plenty of materials to use. En Plein Air: 2D Artmaking (Entering Grades 6-12)

Do you love making Art? Enjoy being in nature? Well this is the perfect course for you. A fundamental part of the Impressionist movement, En Plein Air is the act of painting from life, Outdoors. In this course we will be choosing a medium at the beginning of class, list and pack materials to bring, walk to a spot and spend the rest of class creating our artwork. Students will practice drawing from life, learn new skills and begin developing a portfolio of work. With one drawing or painting completed each day, Students will be ending the course with 5 completed artworks! Instructor: D. Stratton

Mixed Media: A Process Based Project


The use of a variety of media in a work of Art. What is Media? It is a material! In this course students will be using new materials each day. The artwork will start off looking one way, and end looking completely different! In this process oriented class, students will learn about Art Movements such as “Art for Arts Sake”, Abstract Expressionism and Surrealism. These concepts and ideas can help young artists shift their perspective on what it means to create art and be an artist. Students will have the option to use a wide range of materials. These materials include: Acrylic Paint, Watercolor Paint, Markers, Colored Pencils, Textiles, Paper/Collage, and many more!  An additional materials fee of $5 is required, payable to the instructor on the first day of the course. College Prep!


Verbal SAT (Entering grades 10-12) $95


This course offers both an introduction to the SAT verbal sections and an opportunity for further practice. Students will gain an understanding for what to expect on the reading & writing sections of the test and be given ample opportunity to engage in practice. Test strategies will be covered. Students will gain confidence in knowing what will be asked of them on the actual test day as the test is broken down in parts and demystified. Ample time for questions and review will be provided.

The College Essay (Entering grades 10-12) $95

Learn personal essay writing from an experienced writing instructor. Focus will be on producing 1-2 polished personal essays, one of which may serve as an essay for college admission. Students will learn to write with voice and purpose, with a large emphasis placed on the revision process. Students will be impressed by how much a draft can improve over the course of a single week.

It’s BACK! The LongMetal Summer Robotics Experience


Experience the thrill of competitive robotics! Learn real-world engineering and coding skills and compete for the coveted LongMetal Summer Program Trophy!

 

Learn robotics from the Longmeadow High School’s Award-Winning FIRST Robotics team, LongMetal. Led by experienced high school engineers, participants will break off into teams to design, build and program their robots to compete for glory. Students will gain skills in engineering, creative problem solving, leadership and team building as they work to compete on a table-top playing field of complex and fun engineering challenges.

 

Consider LongMetal Summer Robotics as an entry into the world of competitive robotics and a starter program for your own FIRST LEGO League team.

 

Proceeds of this program will benefit Longmeadow High School’s Team LongMetal.
