The Blueberry Bookshelf

October 2018 Bookshelf

Welcome back! I hope you had a wonderful summer with family and friends! Your children have been sharing very thoughtful reflections on our One Book, One School Summer read Maxi's Secrets! In the library we have been inferencing character traits of Maxi, Timminy, Abbie, and Rory and of course reminiscing secrets and sharing thoughts on the ending! All in all, the feedback from our students and from parents with whom I have spoken regarding the summer read, has been positive. Thank you to all the families who spent time reading with your children. The goal of author Lynn Plourde is to use the power of words to make her readers laugh, cry, or sigh. I hope you join me in agreement that Maxi's Secrets met Lynn Plourde's goal!

Whether you were able to read the book or not, we look to all of our books to help us learn lessons about life. Maxi's Secrets is a reminder that perceived shortcomings don't define us and the power of friendship can't be underestimated. It is a book with important messages for all, young and old. On one level it is about a boy named Timminy and his lovable dog Maxi, growing up among peers with physical challenges, while on another level it is about dealing with social, emotional, and physical differences we may face throughout life. We plan to highlight Maxi, Abbie, and Devon during our assembly this month as October is National Disabilities Month.

Massachusetts Children's Book Award Contest

Fourth and fifth graders are once again invited to participate in the Massachusetts Children's Book Award Contest (MCBA). Twenty-five books have been chosen from a list of recommendations. Students are required to read at least 5 books from the list of nominated books in order to vote for their choice. Votes will be collected in library class during the week of March 11-15, 2019. You can find the 2018-2019 list of nominated books here. There are always great titles of various genres and reading levels. Happy Reading!
