Description
Our goal for this lesson was to have our students be able to communicate their feelings and emotions about school. I wanted them to do this through listening to a read-aloud, making connections to their feelings, being able to verbalize those feelings to the teacher, and write in sentences using English conventions.
Content
I can identify words that express feelings. I can make connections between text and self.
Language
I can produce words that express feelings both verbally and in writing.
Technology
I can use Buncee to create a board about feelings by using emojis.
Student work
Procedure
This lesson takes about 3 periods to complete.
First, the students listened to a read aloud of the book, First Day Jitters, by Julie Danneberg. The students were asked comprehension questions orally throughout the story about the character’s feelings. The next day, the students watched a read aloud of the book on YouTube (link below in Resources section). The students were then introduced to a video about feelings and emotions so that they could make a connection between the characters in the book and themselves. The students were all given a feelings poster for support. The students orally discussed their feelings on the first day of school, and completed a worksheet that prompted the students to either match faces with feelings, or draw the emotion on a face. On the third day of the lesson, the students completed The Way I Feel About School worksheet by describing their feelings in writing. The students then shared their writing with the class.

Reflection
This lesson included the 4 skills of English language acquisition; listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Due to covid constraints, we were unable to use Buncee at the time. However, in the future I will have the students each create a Buncee in order to share their feelings. The students will have a choice to use words or emoji pictures in order to share their emotions.
