Students will create a digital story that brings the reader through a special day in their life. They will utilize digital storytelling tools (Pixton, Book Creator) to incorporate visual, spoken, and written storytelling elements. This will be shared at a district-wide cultural celebration event with fellow ENL students across grade levels in the district.
I can use descriptive words to describe my daily activities.
I can write full and complete sentences with proper capitalization and punctuation.
I can use digital storytelling tools to tell a story about a day in my life using words and images.
Introduction
To begin, I will introduce a speaking and listening based activity. Student will be shown an example story of an important event (ex. The Best Eid Ever by Asma Mobin Uddin). Student will engage in a discussion based on the following questions:
What did you learn about the story from the pictures?
Do you notice anything about this holiday that you also celebrate?
What did you learn about the holiday?
As needed, I will model answering the questions (ex. I noticed…)
Planning
Student will begin to plan their own version of a special day in their life.
Student will select their special day.
Student will write the events of the day on post-its notes.
Student will order post it notes to tell a story of the day.
Student will write a series of 5-6 sentences (to become 5-6 boxes on PIxton) based on the post-its. Sentence stems used as needed.
Creating
Student will type their sentences into Pixton with each sentence becoming a cartoon box on Pixton. Student will subsequently create visuals on Pixton to match. Student will utilize BookCreator to read their sentences and add audio.
Pixton
Book Creator
This project went quite well overall. My student really enjoyed utilizing Pixton. She especially liked creating herself as a cartoon character. I think it worked well that she completed the writing first before typing it in. If I were to implement this project again, I would likely provide a list of vocabulary words for my student to use based on their topic.
