Student was assessed as she drafted her narrative and shared her experience from her own family’s wedding celebration. Teacher also utilized a model project to engage and show students how to produce their own stories.
In the future I hope to have more than one student in my class so they can practice not only self reflection but also peer revisions and feedback. They can also practice presenting to peers and evaluating engagement with questions and clapping.
Students will create a digital story using Book Creator to showcase a special moment in their lives, incorporating both images and narrative. The project encourages them to reflect on their experiences, whether at school, home, or in their community. Students will write a short narrative and enhance it with visuals, including photos or drawings, and may also record their voices to narrate the story. This process provides an opportunity for ENL students to practice language skills, improve their digital literacy, and build confidence in speaking. The finished digital story will be shared with other ENL students from grades K-12 and their families, fostering cultural exchange and enhancing family engagement.
I can engage the reader by utilizing visuals and key details to explain a cultural tradition.
I can use formal English to write a narrative explaining chosen details and sequence of a cultural tradition.
I can utilize Book Creator to develop a cohesive sequence of important events.
Students first brainstormed ideas of what they would be comfortable sharing.
Students then produced a moment in their lives using BookCreator to illustrate their experience.
Teacher sat with the student during the writing process to assess and clarify the description of each day of the wedding celebration.
Student also spent time at home discussing the wedding with her family and understanding how each day is planned out.
Once the descriptions were complete, we then finalized the project by adding images.

This project served as a great opportunity for all of our students to get together as a learning celebration at the end to share what they’ve created and learned from this experience.
We are extremely proud of our students and looking forward to our district-wide celebration where our K-12 students will get together and meet students from different grades as they share their own stories. This project allowed teachers to work even closer to our students learning from them and listening to them share their own personal experience.
In the future I will start the project sooner to be able to show more examples of personal narratives. This will also allow for more differentiated vocabulary, personal research, and self and peer revisions.
