Procedure

We have been using Google Classroom as a platform for remote instruction. This unit was one week of instruction for 1st grade and 2nd grade at the Entering and Emerging levels. Every day a new lesson was posted. The lessons contained multimedia material and teacher created activities. The lessons contained audio support and Screencastify instructions to explain how to complete assignments. The activities were scaffolded to build upon the previous activity which reinforced comprehension and gave additional opportunities to practice newly acquired vocabulary. We had not yet begun Google meetings in groups; however, we could assist students during individual meetings.

Day 1 - Nearpod Life Cycle of a Butterfly (students read/listened to each stage of the butterfly's life cycle, drew a picture and labeled it.

Day 2 - Students watched 2 video clips about the life cycle of a butterfly. Then, they completed a worksheet using vocabulary -butterfly, caterpillar, larva, pupa, chrysalis, eggs.

Day 3 - Watch the Very Hungry Caterpillar Movie. Then complete Google Slides- VHC.

Day 4 - Watch movie again. Then complete Google slides -Caterpillar sentences.

Day 5 - Google Slides- Life Cycle Butterfly Writing. Fun Friday - Unscramble the week days.

Reflection

I was not expecting to be teaching my ENL students online. It was very different from our interactions in the classroom where I am constantly encouraging students and praising their efforts and even their smallest accomplishments. Many of our families were already in survival mode and PAUSE created more stress and uncertainty about the future. My ENL colleagues and I tried to create lessons that the students would be able to do on their own, and would enjoy learning about at home. We tried to ensure the lessons were accessible for all students as well.
