Formative Assessment: Evaluate if students are using key vocabulary and applying it in context to the appropriate season.
Areas of consideration: Are students using complete sentences to describe their illustration? Is the clothing chosen appropriate given the temperatures during that season? Are students speaking clearly to articulate their ideas?
This lesson is about dressing for the weather. Students will practice using weather vocabulary in conjunction with clothing vocabulary to describe how they will dress for fall and winter weather. This will be done using Book Creator. Students will create a sentence that goes with a picture they have created and speak to describe the image using the above mentioned vocabulary.
I can describe what kind of clothing to wear during fall and winter.
I can speak clearly to articulate my thoughts.
I can utilize technology to enhance my learning.
As a group, we discuss and chart what we have learned about fall and winter. A venn diagram will be used to illustrate similarities and differences using picture/word cards of the vocabulary words. Next, I will explain the activity. Students will listen and follow along as I give the directions. They will use their Chromebooks and a template created for them on Book Creator to describe and illustrate how we should be dressing for each season based on the weather and temperature.
Because the students are Kindergarteners and Entering and Emerging ELLs, I will provide an example, and create an example with them to get the students started. They will then work independently to complete the template started for them. Students will identify key vocabulary by labeling and then speaking key vocabulary terms. To differentiate the writing portion, I will provide a partial spelling of the vocabulary words so they can practice inputting the beginning or ending sounds of the vocabulary words when labeling. Students will then speak to describe their pictures while recording their voice for a completed project.

I love this lesson. I think going forward I would use it once students learned the vocabulary for all 4 seasons. I think there would be more opportunity to discuss similarities and differences between the seasons and clothing choices. Additionally, as students obtain more vocabulary and knowledge related to why we have season changes, this lesson could be adapted to be taught in conjunction with science and the reasons we have seasons.
