This activity will help students understand the concept of diversity. It will teach students why both differences and similarities should be celebrated in every individual.

Content

I can explain the meaning of diversity and how it applies to me and my classmates.

Language

I can describe qualities that make me unique and discuss with others how we are both alike and different. I can describe how the crayons felt in the story and how they changed by the end of the story.

Technology

I can create a Buncee explaining which color represents me and why.

Procedure

The teacher will show students an image in a single color and the same image in multiple colors. The teacher will initiate a group discussion by asking, “Which picture do you like best? Why? If you could choose one picture to hang in the classroom, which one would you choose and why?” The teacher will discuss with students how single color image is boring and how the picture with multiple colors is more exciting. This will help introduce the word “diversity” and it’s meaning. The teacher will then read the story The Crayon Box that Talked and will continue the discussion on diversity. For example the teacher will ask, “Don’t you think it was silly that the crayons did not like each other at the beginning of the story because they were different colors? How did the crayons change by the end? What did the crayons realize at the end of the story? Why was it better to use different colors?

Reflection

This project was very interesting. I think it’s a great activity for the mainstream classroom. I shared this activity with my colleagues and I shared the Buncee as well. The Buncee was a great way to express creativity through words and pictures. Buncee was easy to use. I think this activity helps you understand how your students are feeling. The book accompanied by the activity enables students to make text -to- self connections. Making these text -to -self connections allows students to have a deeper understanding of the story and teaches them how to connect those feelings to other characters they read about in the future. The book and activity allowed us to have a discussion about diversity. This project allowed my student to describe why he is unique through his qualities.
