Teachers will record anecdotal notes and observe students’ abilities throughout the lesson. Students will be assessed by their final product/page of the Book Creator. They must include a theme or life lesson, images to support their topic, and a recording of their choice explaining how they will apply the life lesson to the real world.

Description

The Elves and the Shoemaker

https://youtu.be/B6SrbWwVKAs

This fairy tale is of a poor shoemaker and his wife who suddenly find they are getting help from a mysterious source. They discover their helpers are little elves, who are working long and hard to finish making shoes. When the man and woman become rich because of the elves, they decide they must give back to the elves in return.

During these lessons, students will watch and listen to the Elves and the Shoemaker and identify a theme, or life lesson. They will use Flipgrid and Book Creator to create videos explaining how they will apply the theme to their own lives.

Students will then collaborate by viewing each others’ videos and creating individual pages for their book on Book Creator.

Procedure

  1. Watch and Listen to the story The Elves and the Shoemaker, https://youtu.be/B6SrbWwVKAs, and identify a theme, or life lesson.

  2. Watch and Listen to the story a second time to identify evidence to support a theme, or life lesson.

  3. We will stop the story at appropriate parts to: discuss the characters’ actions, feelings, and traits and how they relate to the theme.

  4. We will create Flipgrid videos to explain how the theme is important in life.

  5. We will then create a page for a collaborative book on Book Creator to explain how we will apply the theme in our own lives.

Reflection

Using Flipgrid and Book Creator were great applications for our students. They were easy to use and navigate. It allowed our students to showcase their learning in a new and exciting way. As we have transitioned to a more remote style of learning, these platforms are extremely helpful to make learning fun and interactive.
