Student work

Procedure

Students will be asked “ Do you ever go on the internet? What kinds of things do you do?” The teacher will respond and emphasize that “there are many different things we can do online including learning new information, playing games, communicating with friends, and family, and looking at pictures and videos.” The teacher will then say, “ When we use the internet it is important that we follow certain rules to make sure we are safe while having a good time.”

The students will then learn what it means to be a “digital citizen” and what a “pledge” is. The teachers and students will watch the video “We the digital citizens” and be encouraged to dance and learn more on the topic. Following this video, the teacher will ask the students follow-up questions such as “What was one thing you learned from the Digital Citizens?” and “Why should you only talk to people you know online?”

After this the students will complete a writing prompt which asks the students to “Explain what you will do to be a good digital citizen.” Students with varying levels of proficiency may receive a sentence starter which states “ I can be safe on the internet by….” Following this activity, the students will record themselves on Padlet responding to the prompt asking “What does it mean to be a good digital citizen?”

Reflection

The technology implementation aspect of this lesson gave the students the chance to express themselves in a creative way but also practice their speaking skills. This also gave the teacher a way to assess students using a variety of different modalities. I think this lesson also had an impact on students since this is a topic that many of the students are familiar with since they all use technology in their daily routines inside and outside of school. Lastly, since this is a very important topic regarding student safety, this was a lesson that can be transferred outside of the classroom as well.
