Assessments

Formative: Recalling and writing 3 facts about rainbows.

Summative Assessment: After learning about rainbows and making flip books, students sort real facts and fake facts about rainbows using Jamboard.

Description

After completing a real fact and fake fact Jamboard sort, students will create All About Rainbow flip books using digital and hardcopy information. Flip books will contain facts learned in different texts (Nearpod videos, emergent reader). Students will showcase completed flip books on Flipgrid by reading their facts and displaying their illustrations.

Content

I can read an emergent reader about rainbows and retell 3 text-based facts about rainbows. I can listen and view lessons about rainbows and retell 3 evidence-based facts about rainbows.

Language

I can identify the difference between real and fake facts using complete sentences and one explanation. I can write 3 facts explaining how rainbows look, how they are made, and its colors, using complete sentences.

Technology

I can view non-fiction videos about rainbows and tell the difference between real facts and fake facts. I can use Jamboard to sort between the two fact groups.

Student work

Procedure

Day 1: Introduce pre-assessment Jamboard sorting real facts from “fake facts”. Activate prior knowledge about rainbows.

Day 2: View “Rainbows” Nearpod video and write down keywords (2). View “Rain Before Rainbows” Nearpod video and explain one fact. View “How is a rainbow formed” Nearpod video and explain one fact. Facts and keywords are written down alongside teacher.

Day 3: Reread facts and keywords recorded from previous lesson. Read emergent reader “All About Rainbows”. Retell at least 2 facts from the book.

Day 4: Generate and write 3 facts using sentence starters (Rainbows need…, Rainbows have…., Rainbows are…).

Day 5: Illustrate facts in the flip book.

Day 6: Publish flip book by recording a video on Flipgrid. Complete post-assessment Jamboard sorting real and fake facts about rainbows.

Reflection

I know that the student enjoyed learning about rainbows because when we are walking around the school, she will stop and point out rainbows and identify them as “real rainbows” or “fake rainbows” based on the number of colors and/or the colors in them. It shows that she retained the content information. In future lessons I would try to teach students the cycle of how rainbows are made as well as more content-specific vocabulary (ie. refraction). I was thrilled to see that Nearpod had videos and lessons about rainbows, which made engagement and incorporating technology easy. I believe that it was comprehensive for emerging students as there was a lot of labeling. Overall, I would hope to one day use this with multiple students in a class to promote collaboration and academic conversations.
