RJO Intermediate School Teacher: Erica Vidal
Transitioning | Stand-Alone | 4W3, 4SL1, 4SL5 | Pixton, Nearpod
Students will be informally assessed throughout the unit on their ability to participate in class discussions, answer teacher-directed questions, and recall information as we move from lesson to lesson. Students will be formatively assessed on their Nearpod assignments, writing tasks, and final project which will be completed on Pixton.
Students will explore what media is and how we can find a balance between consuming media and doing other activities in this digital age. Students will learn about media balance through resources on Commonsense.org and create a final project showing what they learned on Pixton.
I can use online resources to collect information about a topic I am researching.
I can express what media balance looks like and why it is important to find a healthy balance using my writing skills.
I can use Pixton to create stories which demonstrate my learning.
Students will be guided through Commonsense.org slideshow on media balance titled, “My Media Choices”.
Students will be presented with different media scenarios to discuss making good and bad media choices and why balance in a digital world is important.
Students will complete a Nearpod drag and drop activity where they are presented with multiple scenarios and have to decide if they are media balanced or not.
Students will complete a media tracker, where they keep tabs on their media usage for the week and then reflect on which choices were healthy and which were not.
Students will play a media balance board game, where they must read situations and decide if they are healthy or not.
Students will use Nearpod to create a daily schedule that displays media balance. Students will then write a paragraph about an activity they enjoy doing when they are not using media.
Students will create a cartoon that displays their understanding of media balance and why it is important to make healthy media choices. Students will first draft their cartoons on a paper organizer and then create their final cartoon using the Pixton website.

The students were very interested in this unit. The fact that it had to do with technology and related to their current reality made the unit one of high interest. The students enjoyed the Nearpod drag and drop activities, the board game, and creating the final cartoon to show their overall learning. The students were able to use their creativity and personal expression to demonstrate their learning in a fun way! The Pixton website was student-friendly and the students had a blast using it!
