Description

In this unit, students will engage in text and class discussions centered around feelings of anxiety and stress and ways in which we can deal with these challenging emotions. Students will learn about coping strategies that are relevant to specific situations and settings that may cause us to feel stressed, anxious or overwhelmed.

Content

I can identify four coping mechanisms or strategies that I can use to help deal with difficult and overwhelming emotions.

Language

I can use complete sentences to express emotions and ways I can manage my levels of stress.

Technology

I can use various platforms to create visual, oral and written representations of stress-inducing scenarios and related coping mechanisms.

Student work

Procedure

Students will begin unit by being introduced to pertinent unit vocabulary and concepts. Vocabulary will be reviewed and engaging activities will be embedded into the unit to deepen understanding and mastery of new language. Students will utilize various technology platforms including Nearpod, Google Slides and Canva to complete different tasks throughout the unit. Students will engage with peers across the district by using Google Meets to engage in a read aloud and group discussion around the concepts of self-acceptance and self-care. While all students will be working with the same mentor text, throughout the unit, students across grade levels will engage in various age-appropriate activities leading up to their individualized culminating activities. Various scaffolded materials and differentiated material options will be available during all activities to meet the individual needs of students based on their language proficiency levels. This includes writing stems/prompts, choice of technology tools, and choice of final project. They will be given a number of opportunities to show understanding English language conventions and demonstrate abilities in all four language domains.
