Description
Technology can help people navigate the world. Specifically for 1st graders, we use technology to build background knowledge, explore educational learning platforms, etc. Students will explore different feelings and relate these to their experiences using technology in order to discuss and describe how technology makes them feel.
Content
I can identify my feelings about technology.
Language
I can turn and talk with a partner about my feelings on technology.
Technology
I can use Nearpod and Common Sense Media to explore feelings.
Procedure
First, students brainstormed examples of technology. They created a student-driven anchor chart using post-its, labeling, and illustrations to answer the question: What are examples of technology?
Next, using Common Sense Media, students engaged in a mini-lesson about how technology can make us feel.
Then, students practiced target vocabulary using Nearpod’s matching pairs activity. Students collaboratively discussed what they were curious about during a turn and talk. They used a collaborate board to record their responses.
Finally, students recorded their responses using Nearpod’s open-ended activity to discuss how technology made them feel and why.

Reflection
This lesson was very successful with our 1st and 2nd grade ELLs. They were really able to self reflect on their feelings about technology. It was so great to see the collaboration of the students discussing the topic of the lesson. Technology is all around us and the students really enjoyed this activity.
