Assessments

Summative assessments: Poll questions throughout the lesson to check for understanding, collaborative boards, a benefits and drawbacks t-chart, and a sharing circle.

Formative assessment: Open-ended written responses and a multi-media project.

Description

This lesson will discuss social media platforms that the students in my class use (Instagram and Snapchat). We will use a Nearpod to teach a mini lesson. The students will watch a video that describes what a digital footprint is and then read about the rings of responsibility. While learning the content, the students will be interacting with each other and the Nearpod. The cumulative assessment will be a poster to hang in the hallways of our school that educate other students about their digital footprint and the rings of responsibility.

Content

I can identify reasons for using social media and the challenges that often come along with it.

I can reflect on responsibilities I have related to digital footprints when using social media.

I can identify ways to make the most of social media while still caring for the digital footprint of myself and others.

Language

I can write responses to short answer questions.

I can read about the rings of responsibility.

I can create a poster using language and images.

Technology

I can navigate through the Nearpod lesson.

Procedure

While completing the mini lesson, the lesson was displayed on the board and on the students' computers. The students interacted with the Nearpod as we were working on the mini lesson. Nearpod also allows for students to take notes on the right hand side of the computer. The vocabulary words that are incorporated in the lesson are pre-taught at the beginning of the lesson and the terms and their definitions remained on the front board throughout the entirety of the lesson. When the students are asked to answer short response questions, they are given sentence starters. Students will also use sentence starters when creating their posters. Both students in my class are transitioning, thus, there are only modifications made for the transitioning level.

Reflection

Nearpod was great to incorporate technology into my lesson. The only drawback of using Nearpod is that I found it difficult to make modifications on the slides while maintaining the format. The use of technology for the mini-lesson allowed me to incorporate a video into my lesson and multiple comprehension checks. This was useful for myself and my students because we were able to make sure we were on the same page. If I was to do this lesson next year, I hope to do it in a stand-alone with more students. I think this would make my sharing circles more productive. Also, I found my students had time to make more than one poster in one class period, which was great!
