Appropriate for all English Proficiency Levels | Integrated ENL/ELA | 2W2, 2SL1 | Buncee, BrainPOP, Blooket

Assessments

A student facing checklist will be used to help guide students' writing.

Description

Students will learn about digital safety, specifically the sharing of personal information online, by analyzing a role play situation, watching and discussing a BrainPOP video, playing an interactive classroom game, and writing a class letter using Buncee to a younger student teaching them about the dangers of sharing personal information online. To go even further, they will then create posters on Buncee.

Content

Students will be able to identify which types of information are not safe to share online.

Language

Students will be able to transfer their knowledge in order to teach younger students how to stay safe online by writing a friendly letter.

Technology

Students will be able to create a poster on Buncee highlighting digital safety.

Procedure

Lesson vocabulary will be pre-taught to help support ELL’s, then students will observe two role play situations in which kids interact with strangers online. An inquiry based discussion will occur in which students will identify why it is important to keep personal information private. Students will watch the BrainPOP video, Internet Safety. To support ELL’s, prompts will be provided for students to respond to requests for private information.

Students will participate in a quick game called “Shareable?” and will use thumbs up and thumbs down to show their recognition of what is personal information and what is not.

For independent practice, students will write a letter to a kindergartener imploring them to be safe on the internet, they will share their knowledge learned in the lesson. A template of the letter and graphic organizers will help students with minimal letter writing skills to complete this task.

As an extension/assessment, students will participate in a Blooket game. Students will create internet safety posters on Buncee.

Reflection

I feel that this lesson contains vital information for students that are going to be using the internet. Student safety is always the most important consideration in all aspects, but can be overlooked when handing a child a device. It can easily be assumed that they are aware of safety protocols and that they transfer knowledge from real life to online life seamlessly, which is not always the case. Students need explicit instruction to remain safe online and it is our responsibility as educators to help them acquire the skills necessary to learn safely online. Students seemed interested in learning about how to stay safe online and were very engaged in the activities. They came in with less knowledge than we had anticipated. They did well with the assessment and were able to identify what is safe and what is unsafe to share when online, which shows the lesson was effective. Furthermore, their letters to kindergarteners show that they are happy to apply their new knowledge to teach others. They also LOVED creating internet safety posters on BUNCEE!
