As a continuation of an ELA writing unit, students will write about something that they are “experts” in to create a how-to book. Using Canva, students will introduce their topic and share their tips for how to be experts in the topic of their choice.
I can write about a topic I am familiar with using new vocabulary and transition words.
I can share about a familiar topic by reading aloud and practicing my speaking.
I can use digital tools to share my story.
Introduction: Students will be led in a discussion about their interests and strengths. Students will be encouraged to identify something that is important to them and which they feel they are “experts” at.
Planning: Using graphic organizers and identifying topic specific vocabulary, students will identify the different components of a topic that would be important for their audience to know.
Writing: Using sentence starters and transition words, students will create a writing piece describing their area of expertise.
Creating: Students will use digital tools to record audio/video of their stories and design a slide to represent and reflect their topic.
Sharing/Closure: Students will present their story to one another and answer questions about their topics.
Students selected topics they were excited and knowledgeable about. This was beneficial to them to work on various language components while having background knowledge of their topic.
