Description

Building background knowledge about early 1900 immigration and Ellis Island is very important at the start of this unit. After reading the book, The Orphan of Ellis Island the students had a better understanding about the struggles immigrants faced in the early 1900's. The students completed a project using technology where they were able to research elements from the story and connect it to real world experiences. Students used Buncee to upload pictures, use video and audio, attach links to support their learning.

Content

I can analyze the theme in the story and design a Buncee Bento Book Box that relates to the theme of the story.

Language

I can discuss, ask & answer questions, and predict what is happening in the book, The Orphan of Ellis Island.

Technology

Use of Chromebooks, Kami, and Buncee.

Procedure

PREPARATION: To engage students, teachers will build background knowledge by thinking through the text and taking a closer look in classroom conversations. Teachers will provide non-linguistic and linguistic explanations of target vocabulary to prompt prior knowledge and make meaningful connections.

PRESENTATION: Teachers will name, explain, and model the summary graphic organizer and interactive anchor chart. Teachers will utilize and implement the Buncee App for completion of the Bento Book Box.

PRACTICE: Teachers will require students to complete the graphic organizer and Buncee Bento Book Box. Students will collaborate with their peers, utilize target vocabulary, and participate in integrated experiential listening and speaking tasks. Learning strategy objectives will include all ENL modalities; listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Metacognitive strategies will be implemented when ELLs work with their peers to discuss their findings for listening practice and when they discuss what they learned during the listening and speaking tasks and identify ways they can improve their listening and speaking skills.

Reflection

Students utilized Buncee in order to complete a Bento Box after reading the book The Orphan of Ellis Island. By incorporating this technological platform into the lesson, students were engaged, as they were able to use the functions of the program to create their personal representation of their response to the book. They were able to create, edit and upload voice recordings of themselves, post hyperlinks, and import images and special characters. Teaching strategies that were used throughout the duration of this lesson included: explicit instruction of vocabulary, pairing students according to level, simplified directions, visuals, graphic organizers, and modeling in a co-teaching environment. This project was meaningful for students because they were able to make connections to what they read. They were able to get creative and design their board however they envisioned it. It gave them more experience setting up audio recordings, where they gained opportunities to practice their speaking skills. Lastly, and most importantly, they had meaningful classroom discussions with peers and contributed their thoughts and ideas.
