Procedure

Start with a paired reading to introduce the topic of digital citizenship: Goodnight Moon and Goodnight IPad.

Nearpod: Use the Nearpod to discuss how technology makes you feel. Then, we will play an emoji game. This is scenario based and the students will draw emotions to show how they would feel based on the scenario.

Show commonsense.org video titled: Say Goodbye To Technology. They introduce the idea of Pause, Breathe and Finish up, this technique is to help students when it is time to put their technology away and to cope with the emotions they are feeling.

Next the students will move on to their writing piece of the lesson. We will brainstorm with the students what activities they can do instead of using technology. Students will pick one of the activities, write a sentence, and draw a picture to match.

Students will have an author share. They will take turns sharing what they wrote and describe their picture.

Reflection

This lesson went well. The students were engaged and enjoyed the topic of the lesson. They were able to make connections to the different feelings you can have when having to take a break from technology. The Nearpod was a great visual for the students to draw the different feelings they can have in different scenarios using technology. The Common Sense video was engaging and developmentally appropriate for our students. This was a great resource for them to learn a new strategy when they get upset about taking a break from their technology. Overall, this was a great lesson and the students were very engaged and interested.
