Assessments

Students used a recording sheet during this experiment that they used to help them with their reflection piece at the end of the lesson on day 2.  Students shared their reflections and a class discussion was conducted. Class discussions help students share their ideas with their peers and it also helps students build their basic interpersonal skills and cognitive academic language proficiency.

Description

Students were excited about this lesson because they knew it would be a hands-on experience. They also enjoyed the Nearpod technology componet of the lessons. Prior to the lesson, we had a class discussion on why it is important to keep natural water sources clean. Students in this district live very close to a harbor, which they often visit with their families. After watching a video on water pollution prevention to help protect sea life.  Students listened to a story about how polluted water can affect sea life and drinking water. Premade bags were given to students to be able to add water pollutants to cups of water after they were discussed in each part of the story. Students were able to see how these everyday items can be pollutants to sea life and can also affect clean drinking water. Students were then able to use items from their bags to brainstorm/use hands-on ways to help clean up the polluted water. Finally, students were then able to reflect on the lesson and come up with ways that they can be a part of helping keep their local harbor clean.

Reflection

Students enjoyed this lesson because they love hands-on learning lessons. When I incorporate hands-on learning into my ENL lessons, I find that students really enjoy learning and better retain information taught. Nearpod was also a great technological tool for the lesson on day one. This helped students to get engaged in the lesson.
