Formative & Summative: I will informally assess students' level of understanding throughout the lesson by observing their participation and quality of their responses. I will make adjustments in my level of questioning as necessary to provide appropriate levels of support.

Description

Students will work together to create a Buncee Board that introduces members of the Central Boulevard School community to new students and their families.

Content

I can read, write, listen and speak in English to generate questions relevant to a topic.

Language

I can read, write, listen and speak in English to conduct research and gather information about a topic.

Technology

I can use technology to report on a topic using appropriate facts and relevant details.

Student work- currently unavailable

Procedure

  1. Students work in pairs or small groups to brainstorm a list of people who belong to the Central Boulevard School community.

  2. With their partner, students will generate a list of questions to be used in an interview with members of the school community (i.e. principal, custodian, security guard, etc.).

  3. Students will use their Chromebooks and Google accounts to email school community members to schedule a time to meet for an interview.

  4. Students will meet with each staff member at their scheduled time.

  5. Students will read, write, listen and speak in English to conduct an interview with each staff member and record their responses.

  6. Students will reconvene in the classroom to debrief after each interview and discuss takeaways and relevant details.

  7. Students will compile information from the interviews into a Buncee Board titled "Welcome to Central Boulevard." Each staff member will be featured in a personal Buncee slide. The slide will contain information about their role at CBS, how many years they have worked at CBS, personal interests and fun facts.

  8. Students will use Buncee on their Chromebooks to combine their Buncee slides into the Buncee Board, "Welcome to Central Boulevard."

*Please note: We were unable to complete this project as school was suspended for COVID-19 just as we began brainstorming interview questions. I would still like to complete this project when we return to school.

Differentiation: I will adjust my level of questioning to reflect each student's language proficiency and level of participation. Sentence stems and frames will encourage students to expand on their thinking and assist with language production.

Resources and Other Supporting Materials:

Students will use their Chromebooks to complete this project with:

  • Google Mail

  • Buncee

  • Google Drive

Reflection

I would like to complete this project upon our return to school because I feel it offers a genuine introduction to the people of the Central Boulevard School community. Newcomers and their families will have access to information about key members of our school community in a fun, welcoming way. The process of generating and asking interview questions will be an opportunity for students to practice using English in academic and social settings.
