Description

In ENL stand-alone, students in grades 6-8 learned about what it means to have a school community. In order to practice listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills, students brainstormed people in the school community with whom they’d like to get to know better. Students generated a list of 5 W & H questions with partners, revised their questions to make them into interview questions, and eventually scheduled an interview session with the person of their choice to ask the questions. Once the interviews were completed, students created a Buncee titled “All About Me” in which they showcased the school community member they chose, had the interview questions listed, and had a QR code on the front. After the Buncees were finished, students printed the cover page to hang around school so that other students were able to scan the QR code, learn about the school community members, and become increasingly more involved in the school community themselves.

Content

I can create a Buncee presentation about a school community member in order to learn more about the different members in our school.

Language

I can generate questions in the form of 5 Ws & H, record answers to questions, collaborate with a partner to interview a school community member, and present my findings to my classmates.

Technology

I can use Buncee in order to create a school-wide “All About Me” page with a QR scanning code.

Student Work- currently unavailable

Procedure

Day 1: Students learned about school communities and decided on who in the community they wanted to get to know better.

Day 2-3: Students generated 5W & H questions in order to create interviews for school community members.

Day 4: Students conducted interviews with school community members of their choice (i.e. principals, nurses, custodial staff, secretaries, lunch servers etc.)

Day 5-6: Students introduced to Buncee, received a mini-lesson on Buncee, and were able to play around with the features of Buncee. They were to create their own Buncee as a way to learn all the different tools on the program.

Day 7-9: Students worked on Buncee program to create their “All About Me” presentation and printed the cover pages to eventually post around school.

Day 10: Students presented their Buncees.

Reflection

To start, this lesson has no student work because the unit was going to begin the week after schools were shut down. I’d LOVE to do this project next year with my students because I find it so important and I think students would not only learn so much, but will be able to practice their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. Buncee is very user friendly and the ability to add in the QR code was very interesting. The idea would to eventually collect many different “All About Me” profiles, and then create a Buncee board in which the school would be able to access to learn about all different people in the school. In the end, this would have been a great lesson to work through with students and I look forward to completing it in the future.
