Assessments

Students will be presenting a multimedia presentation where they can show their information and explain what they have learned. Students will also be giving peer feedback to each other throughout the writing process as well as after their presentations.

Description

The students will be exploring the impact humans have on the environment. We will be focusing on the negative impact plastics have on the environment to create awareness. We will be using the read aloud “One Plastic Bag” to learn about The Recycling Women of Gambia and the positive impact they had on their environment. To build background we will also be using programs such as Generation Genius and Reading A to Z to learn more about the topic, important vocabulary and the effect plastics have on our environment.

Content

I can identify the effect plastic has on the environment.

Language

I can write a paragraph reporting my findings.

Technology

I can create a digital display presenting my information.

Student work

Procedure

First, students will be using the Generation Genius website to learn about the harmful effect plastic can have on our environment. We will be working on identifying some of the key vocabulary during this activity. Students will be taking notes as we stop throughout the lesson to gain more information.

Next, students will have an opportunity to discuss some of the things they learned throughout the video and work on questions about the video together (These questions accompany the video on this site).

Then, we will Read Aloud “One Plastic Bag; Isatou Ceesay and the Recycling Women of the Gambia” by Miranda Paul. We will discuss ways that this community used plastic to recycle and clean up their environment. We will connect this and brainstorm other actions that can be taken in our own community to reduce, reuse and recycle.

After, students will be able to use their notes and ideas from our resources to write a paragraph noting what they felt they learned, and the most important thing people can do to support our earth.

Lastly, students will be able to form their own digital poster to promote their ideas of how to positively impact the environment.

These activities were done over a few days as well as a final presentation to the group.

Reflection

I think students really enjoyed this topic. I think next year I will be diving deeper into the topic and how to use the read aloud to create additional projects and hands on models with the information.
