Principal's Welcome

Dear Parents/Carers,

The end of the year offers an opportunity for us all to reflect on the year that has just gone by and to plan for a successful new year. We have had a lot to celebrate throughout this year - over 2000 spaces devoted to trips and visits, international collaborations, some remarkable academic achievements as well as many examples of students’ and staff’s personal and professional growth.

In module one of this academic year, we had the privilege of welcoming OFSTED to the academy so that they can see firsthand the amazing work that staff and students do each day. We believe that excellence is a habit and not an act. Therefore, the overall OFSTED grading of “Good” with an “Outstanding” Sixth Form is a testament of what we repeatedly do. We were particularly pleased that the inspectors, like Challenge Partners who visited previously, recognised our highly inclusive culture and reported that “this inclusive school has high expectations of all pupils’ achievement and behaviour”. Inspectors highlighted the quality of education provided, particularly for children with SEND, and highlighted that the academy “provides pupils with strong pastoral support, including support for pupils’ mental health”. Our post-16 students were praised for being “exceptionally mature”, with the student body being recognised as “polite and courteous”.

This week, we have enjoyed an overwhelming support for our school panto. Families, colleagues, friends and students who were able to attend the events will testify to the amazing talent we have here at Longfield. The fruits of the hard work our staff and students had put into the panto was there for all to see and I sincerely hope that we can open our doors to more families and friends at future events.

We are also pleased to have hosted the Faraday Challenge at Longfield. This is an event that is organised in partnership with the Institute of Engineering and Technology and is run as a competition for students in year 8. We are delighted that this year’s event brought together students from sister academies so that they too can experience some of the little things we do here that makes our academy truly special. In addition to all of these, representatives of the Bank of England visited our school this week and offered some insightful sessions about the world of banking and finance to our year 11 and post-16 students who study finance.

This module will end with special assemblies during which students will be recognised for their achievements throughout modules one and two.

I want to take a moment to offer my profound gratitude to all parents, carers, students and staff for the hard work, resilience, determination and enormous support that has allowed us to enjoy another successful year.

Christmas time is an opportunity to give back to the community and to support the less privileged in our society. Therefore, I am extremely proud of the work our students and staff have done in raising money through our Save the Children Christmas Jumper Day, which raised £451, and the support for the Community Cupboard in West Kingsdown.

As we look forward to 2024, I would like to ask that all parents and carers make attendance a priority. This is one area we continue to work hard on but have not succeeded in achieving our 95% target. As Principal, it breaks my heart when I read some of the very weak reasons a small minority of parents and carers give for students’ absence. Research has shown that “Good attendance at school is not just valuable, it's essential” and that going to school is “directly linked to improved exam performance, further learning opportunities, better job prospects” as well as students’ emotional wellbeing. It is with this in mind that I ask that we all make attendance to school our number one priority for the year ahead.

On behalf of all our staff and governors, I wish each member of our community a very happy, healthy, and safe festive season, and I look forward to seeing all of our students and families again in 2024.

Kind regards

Dr F. Donkor

Dr Donkor - Visits Tema International School Ghana

Over the October break, our Principal Dr Donkor visited a fellow IB World School; Tema International School in Ghana. Dr Donkor very much enjoyed visiting the school and its amazing students, staff and facilities. Speaking after his visit, Dr Donkor said "We have so much to learn and to share, and I hope that this visit will be the beginning of bigger things for our respective institutions", referring to the potential partnership between Longfield Academy and Tema International School. Also during his visit to Ghana, Dr Donkor visited SOS-Hermann Gmeiner International College, with the view of establishing further links for future collaboration between our schools. This marks the beginning of incredibly exciting opportunities for students and staff in all of the schools, to collaborate on an international level.

Ofsted Inspection 2023

"Good with an outstanding sixth form"

Longfield Academy is delighted to be able to share the results of our September 2023 Ofsted inspection, in which we have been graded "Good" with an "Outstanding" sixth form. You can view the report, along with a letter from the Principal, Dr Donkor, on our website.

Performing Arts

Year 12 Charity Concert

On the 16th November, the Expressive Arts department were proud to present a Charity Concert, organised entirely by the year 12 Performing Arts students. The event, organised in order to raise funds for Mind and National Youth Arts Trust, comprised of students from across all year groups, featured performances from musical theatre, pop and rock songs and a physical theatre sequence from Animal Farm. Singers, dancers, instrumentalists and actors all participated in what was a truly entertaining night that showed the talents of Longfield Academy at its best. Every number was put together, directed, and choreographed by the three year 12 students: Erin, Poppy and Zac, who, along with their peers, managed to raise over £450, which was split between the two charities.

Alice in Wonderland - Pantomime 2023

What better way to kick off Christmas than a hilarious, energetic, bonkers pantomime? Crammed full with your favourite characters from the famous Lewis Carroll story, with added pop songs, this was a fantastic event that once again showed off the huge amount of talented singers, actors and dancers that we have at Longfield Academy. Huge musical numbers? Check. A live band? Check. The most raucous audience interaction? Double check. Alice in Wonderland was panto at its finest. A huge congratulations to all involved: to the huge cast of immensely talented students from across all year groups, to the staff and students playing in the band, and the whole production team behind the incredible show, which, once again featured a number of post 16 students. We are so looking forward to our next full-scale musical - Beauty and the Beast.

Shakespeare Schools Festival - Macbeth

We are once again delighted to be participating in the nation-wide Shakespeare School Festival, and delighted to announce that our entry this year will be Macbeth. Auditions will be held in the year for all students from years 7-12. The performance will take place at the Woodville Halls on March 14th.

MFL Creative Homework Project

Our KS3 students recently completed MFL Creative Homework projects. We are so proud to share some of the amazing work our students created. Well done everyone!

Saturday School for Year 11's

Saturday school has restarted this module and we are so proud of our students who attended. We completed almost 140 hours of learning in total. The focus and effort seen in these sessions are faultless. We also observed our 2 minute silence at the 11th hour for our remembrance day. Well done to those students who attended both morning sessions- completed a total of 4hours of revision. Well done! Looking forward to seeing more students this weekend.

Maths - Mrs Shanthan

In the Maths higher session on Saturday, we started off with mark maximisers on Grade 4-7 which are questions in a grid with increasing difficulty that students started, as soon as they entered the room. This session was aiming for 20 marks with short questions as well as 4 mark questions. We then moved on to practicing paper 1 topics for upcoming PPEs such as recurring decimals proof- Grade 7, 3D pythagoras and trigonometry Grade 7-8. We then observed our 2 minute silence to remember our fallen heroes then moved onto circle theorems Grade 7-8. But did we stop there ? No! We decided to use our final 10 minutes on recapping Rearranging formulae we covered before half-term. Keeping that memory refreshed! What an amazing work ethic from our students. Not a second was wasted.

Music - Mrs Evans

They worked on their set compositions which is one of four pieces of coursework where they have to compose a piece of music to a set brief. As part of this coursework task, they need to write a log explaining their intentions which can enhance their grades as it helps moderators to understand their compositions giving them a chance at marks they may not have achieved had they not made their intentions clear to the moderator. Students are given the choice to use Soundtrap or Noteflight to compose their music and Nicole also used the keyboards downstairs for a while to create music. Students were focused on whichever part of this process needed improvement and I provided regular check-ins and feedback which I gave to them both verbally and in the google classroom so that they could continue to work on them at home.

History - Mr Long

During our  history session, we focused on exam skills, ensuring that this element of our practice is water tight, making it easier to transfer the knowledge we have into writing. We spent the first 30-45 minutes studying content, and then used this knowledge we gained in our exam practice. We are currently re-covering Germany and this topic is going down very well with those involved. We like to use fun, innovative methods to make our practice stronger.

Remembrance Day

Students observed the two minute silcence for remembrance day.

British Army Visit

Longfield Academy was delighted to welcome the British Army today, who delivered an interactive roadshow event for our students. The event was delivered by a team of serving personnel from the British Army’s high readiness brigade. Students had a great time meeting with the personnel, getting hands-on with kit, trying their hand at some teambuilding challenges, and finding out more about careers in the army.

Bronze College Awards

Today was the first college awards assembly of the year. We are delighted to see so many students achieving their Bronze Award! Four of our winners from today opted to use our book vending machine to dispense a literary prize. We look forward to celebrating more success in the other college assemblies this week.
