Principal's Welcome

Dear Parents/Carers,

It has been another very successful module, and I hope that this edition of our newsletter gives you a glimpse of the exciting events our students have participated in and the many opportunities they have had for developing their academic and social skills in the last module.  It is our intention to communicate more regularly with parents and carers, celebrate our staff and students, and to share the many exciting events taking place at the academy more frequently. Therefore, we will be introducing our fortnightly newsletter – The Longfield Legends following our return from the Easter break. I will encourage parents to share any exciting achievements of our students outside of school so we can use this medium to celebrate them.

Upon our return from the holidays, year 11 and 13 students will be preparing to sit their GCSE and A Level examinations respectively. These are very important examinations and we want to make sure that all our students are well prepared and supported so that they can maximise their potential. We have consequently organised Easter revision sessions for students. These will be facilitated by our own staff. Ms Shanthan has previously communicated session dates and times, and students were reminded of these before the end of the module. I would like to encourage all parents and carers to help in ensuring that those students who have been invited take advantage of the opportunities their teachers have offered to help them improve the chances of success in the summer. We will continue to offer breakfast revision sessions for year 11, including warm breakfast free of charge, after the holidays, as well as after school and Saturday sessions to help ensure that we leave no stone unturned in our preparations for the summer examinations. Year 11 and 13 students will crown their time at the academy with our annual prom on 27th June and 4th July respectively.

I look forward to welcoming many of you to the academy on the 11 and 12 July for our production of ‘Beauty and the Beast’. I have no doubts that families who have seen our students perform in the past will attest to their wonderful talent and this year’s performance promises to be even better.

As part of our Enrichment Week in July, all our students will be invited to participate in school trips as well as engage with rich activities both within and outside of the academy. The fantastic activities we have planned include: trips to Castles, Bedgebury Pinetum, Bowling and more! We also have in-school days dedicated to celebrating the range of cultures at Longfield Academy, different future career options and team building competitions.

I have no doubt that this will be an excellent and enjoyable week for all. Please look out for more details from Ms Kyriocou about the different activities for your child’s year group, and in particular encourage them to sign up for their preferred trip/activity as soon as possible to ensure that they do not miss out on a preferred trip.

I am grateful for the many encouraging emails and feedback we continuously receive from parents and carers and for the continued support. It has indeed been a very good year so far and I look forward to more successes.  Have a blessed and peaceful Easter holiday.

Kind regards

Dr F. Donkor

Faraday Challenge - Leigh Academies Trust

At the end of last module, Longfield Academy hosted the Faraday Challenge for schools in the Leigh Academies Trust. Teams from SJWMS, The Leigh Academy, The Hundred of Hoo Academy and Stationers' Crown Woods Academy visited Longfield Academy to take part in an engineering challenge. Students were tasked to design a solution for the Highways Agency to make travelling via road more user friendly for different users, whilst ensuring that their solution was sustainable. The teams designed, developed and produced a prototype, before presenting their idea to the judging panel. All the designs were creative, innovative and well thought out. Congratulations to The Leigh Academy who won this year's Faraday Challenge, and a huge well done to every student who took part.

Annual Careers Fair

On Friday, Longfield Academy hosted its annual Careers Fair. We were delighted to welcome representatives from a huge range of organisations, including our own Sixth Form, Leigh Academies Trust, Darent Valley Hospital (DVH), The ASK programme, THB, Royal Navy Recruitment, RAF Recruitment, J & E Hall International, Ebbsfleet Garden City, London South East Colleges, Canterbury Christ Church University, Hadlow College, North Kent College, University of Kent, Royal Central School of Speech & Drama, Metropolitan Police Service.

A huge thank you to all of our visitors who came to inspire our students!

Commando Chef - Royal Marines

Today Longfield Academy was delighted to welcome the Commando Chef to run events with our year 9 and 10 students. Mike is a fully trained Royal Marine chef, who uses cooking as a platform to engage, inspire and educate young people.

CBBC - Dumping Ground Star!

Longfield Academy is proud to announce that one of our talented year 7s, Michael Carpenter, has recently starred in the CBBC show "The Dumping Ground". Michael will be appearing in series 11 and 12 as the character of Oscar. Congratulations to Michael on his achievement.

Informal Concert

On 1st February, a huge audience of family and friends were treated to another Informal Concert, organised by Ms. Evans. The acts consisted of students who participate in peripatetic lessons, as well as GCSE Music, and Post 16 Performing Arts students. The whole evening was a musical extravaganza of rock, musical theatre, pop, and jazz, featuring soloists, instrumentalists and our Vocal Workshop students, who are rehearse with Ms. Evans on a Thursday afterschool, and two bands, who meet on Monday evenings with Ms. Evans Mr Flaherty. A massive well done to all involved!

The next informal concert will be on 1st May.

Bletchley Park Visit

Today, Computer Science students visited Bletchley Park. During WWII, Bletchley Park was a top secret government facility focused on code breaking. Our students enjoyed a tour of the historic site to find out more about the work that went on there. Students also took part in a workshop focused on modern day encryption.

Online Parent Workshops

We have been made aware of two online parent workshops being offered by North East London NHS Foundation Trust. One is on tackling exam stress, the other is on understanding ADHD in children. Both are hosted and run by the NELFT. Please contact the school office if you would like the meeting links to either of these sessions.

National Careers Week

It's National Careers Week! Here at Longfield Academy, students will be exploring the Virtual Careers Fair during tutor times. In addition, year 10 will find out more information about their 1:1 Careers Advice appointments which will be starting soon. Parent/carers can also visit the NCW website (https://nationalcareersweek.com/) to find free resources and information to support your child's future.

Reading Challenge '24

Mrs Cripps in our LRC invites all students to take part in the 2024 reading challenge! Why not stop by the LRC and discuss how you are getting on with the challenge, and choose your next literary adventure!

World Book Day

Yesterday was World Book Day! Decorations were to be found all around the academy to showcase the favourite books of our community. Well done to all students and staff who got involved!

British Science Week

ElevationX have been in school over the last two days to celebrate British Science Week. Students in KS3 have had the opportunity to take part in a variety of workshops celebrating different areas of STEM subjects. Students looked at the link between sport and science in 'What's the Watt?' by finding out how much exercise they needed to complete to earn different types of food. Their programming and communication skills were tested when working out how to program a robot around a course and finally, their problem solving and engineering skills were challenged when they competed in groups against each other to not only build the tallest tower but also one that would withstand a hurricane and an earthquake. #BritishScienceWeek

Year 11 Residential Trip

This weekend, 55 Year 11 students were part of a residential at Kingswood. The trip included several team building activities such as a scavenger hunt, camp fire, Jacob’s ladder, environmental art and team games. This was in addition to revision sessions for maths, science, English and humanities.

Red Nose Day

Today is Red Nose Day , and we have been raising money for Comic Relief. Students were invited to wear something red, along with various members of staff dressing up. Thank you to everyone who has donated, you can continue to do so via the link previously shared.

Shakespeare Schools Festival:

On Thursday 14th March, Mrs Pike and Miss Jones gave 29 of our students the privilege of performing Macbeth as part of the Coram Shakespeare Schools Festival at the Woodville halls. Alongside students from Grange Park, Milestone, and Harris Academy Beckenham, the fantastic actors were commended in their appraisal on their "moving" performance, and their powerful acting. So many of the cast had never performed before, and this was a wonderful opportunity for them to perform on a professional stage as part of a nation-wide festival. A huge congratulations to all involved!

Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Expidition

This weekend, Bronze DofE participants went on their practice expedition. The instructors remarked how impressed they were with the resilience and hard work of our young people. Well done to everyone for completing their training!
