Principal's Welcome

Dear Parents/Carers,

As we come to the end of 2022, I want to take a moment to offer my profound gratitude to all parents, carers, students and staff for the hard work, resilience, determination and enormous support that has allowed us to enjoy another successful year.

We have left no stone unturned in our quest towards maximising opportunities for all our students. In addition to a greater emphasis on the quality first teaching, we have continued with our tradition of supporting our students with their academic work beyond the normal school day, through after school interventions, Saturday and holiday sessions, as well as one-to-one and small group tuition through the National Tutoring Programme.

We have introduced a life coach programme and our students have participated in various workshops which we expect to impact on behaviour and wellbeing positively.

Including:

  • Resilience Workshops

  • Road Safety

  • BMX Course

  • Counselling with Mary Dolly Foundation

  • Mental Health Ambassador Training

  • Building positive relationships (Spectrum Centre)

  • Kent Police - Online Safety Talk

  • Fitter Stronger Intervention

  • Risk It - Risk Taking Behaviour Workshop

  • Anti Bullying Workshop

  • Anti Bullying Ambassadors Training

  • Social skills programme

  • Positive behaviour programme

  • Sex Education & Consent

Between September and December, students have had fantastic and exciting opportunities to extend their learning through a wide range of educational visits. In modules one and two alone, over 300 attendees - from year 7 to year 13 - have benefited from enjoying educational visits from across a number of subjects, such as English, science, geography, drama, music, art, film studies, photography and PE. These visits are directly linked to our students' education and help them develop the wider knowledge and context of the subjects they are studying. They have included theatre visits to see a Shakespeare play as well as more modern performances, such as 'Back to the Future', in both Kent and London, and a visit to The Turner Gallery.

In addition, there have been other visits that have supported our students' personal development outside of their subjects. These have included visits to Oxford University, Canterbury University, and Kent University and Sussex University, thus fostering our students' aspiration into further education at some of the world's leading universities.

Christmas time is an opportunity to give back to the community and to support the less privileged in our society. Therefore, I am extremely proud of the work our students and staff have done in raising money through our Save the Children Christmas Jumper Day, support for the Community Cupboard in West Kingsdown by collecting donations, and donating to the Giving Tree at Bluewater.

I am pleased that through our newly introduced parent/carer drop-in events, we are now able to meet more parents and carers regularly as we seek to improve our home-school partnership for the benefit of all our students. These will continue in 2023, alongside the regular letters and the Principal’s briefing videos, so that we continue to improve communication between home and school.

I thank all of our parents and carers for the diverse ways you have supported us: through the Facebook pages, your letters and emails of encouragement and support, the challenge you offer and the wisdom you share. My thanks also goes to those of you who have supported the various activities on site, including the informal music concerts, school pantomimes, open events, second-hand uniform sales and charity events amongst others.

On behalf of all our staff and governors, I wish each member of our community a very happy, healthy, and safe festive season, and I look forward to seeing all of our students and families again in 2023.

Informal Christmas Concert

On Thursday 8th December we held an Informal Music Concert after school. Well done to all our talented performers, and we would like to thank everyone who came along to support them!

Donations to The Community Cupboard

The Community Cupboard is a registered charity to help people who need access to food, household items and who may need signposting to other services.

We would like to give a huge thank you to everyone here at Longfield Academy for their generous support with the donation of food/ toiletries for “The Community Cupboard” at West Kingsdown.

On Friday 16th December one of the volunteers and the local community warden came along to visit the centre and collect the items that were kindly donated by both staff and students.

As you can see we have had a huge response and students are happy knowing they are helping others within the community.

We will continue taking donations of non perishable items for The Community Cupboard in the New Year and ensure that they are delivered to those in need.

Have a wonderful festive season.

Many thanks

Matilda Trip

On the 30th of November, 40 year 7's were treated to an afternoon at the theatre watching Matilda the Musical at the Cambridge Theatre in London's West End. A number of the students had never been to the theatre before, and were very excited about seeing the sights of London on their drive in. But this was nothing compared to the show itself; despite traffic causing some delays, the students and staff enjoyed a truly lovely afternoon, with many of them stating that it was the best thing they had ever seen! We cannot thank the students enough for being exceptionally behaved, true ambassadors for Longfield Academy.

We look forward to organising the next one!

Back to the Future Trip

On Thursday 6th October, 40 lucky year 9 students had the opportunity to visit the Adelphi Theatre in London to watch Back to the Future. The show was amazing and was thoroughly enjoyed by all students. It is a definite MUST SEE show!

We were fortunate enough that the trip was funded by the Trust co-curricular grant.

V&A Museum

On 24th November, the Post-16 art and photography students went to visit the V&A Museum in South Kensington to look at the wide range of exhibits and gain inspiration for their current projects. The V&A houses a fascinating mixture of art, photography, jewellery, sculptures and cultural objects. The students really enjoyed the experience and had these things to say:

'I really enjoyed our day trip out to the V&A. Now that I know where it is, I will be returning many times to really see everything I missed out on. It was so interesting to see all of the different forms of art that are created throughout the different countries!'

'The trip to the V&A was very inspirational. It helped me get ideas on what I could do in future photography as I was able to see photos in the museum. This trip has helped open my eyes on other ways to portray an art style.'

'Our school trip to the V&A was eye opening seeing all the art pieces and photography pieces up close and in person! This will help me improve my photography skills!'

Bluewater Giving Tree

This has now become an annual event with Post 16 students donating, and then purchasing toys and gifts for a variety of children across the ages. They collected £372.50 and the school council chose the toys. The whole of P16 were taken by coach to Bluewater on 14th December where our gifts were gratefully accepted by the team.

Care Home Visit

Performing arts students from year 7 right through to year 13 spent their Wednesday afternoon entertaining the residents at Bramblings Residential Home in Longfield. The residents were treated to a variety of Christmas and musical theatre songs, and sang along with almost every one! We look forward to returning in the Spring.

Community Coffee Morning

After having to be cancelled due to the heavy snowfall we at The Spectrum Centre, Longfield Academy were finally able to welcome patrons from Fairby Grange (New Ash Green) and The Hollies (Gravesend) for a fun filled Christmas coffee morning.

Our visitors not only enjoyed a traditional Christmas spread but also thoroughly enjoyed taking part in party games and being vocal when joining in with the Christmas sing- a- long led by both students and staff.

Thank you to all the students who supported this event. A great time was had by all.
