Principal's Welcome

Dear Parents/Carers,

All too soon the 2022/23 academy year has come to an end, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our staff, students, parents, carers, and strategic partners for helping to make the year a successful and fulfilling one. Longfield Academy continues to grow from strength to strength and I am immensely proud of all the hard work and dedication from our staff and the many opportunities we have been able to offer our students in our quest to help them ‘achieve beyond expectations’.

Students across all year groups, 7-13, have had multiple opportunities to embark on exciting trips and educational visits throughout the academic year.  These experiences have not only broadened their perspectives on life, but they have also helped to bring the curriculum alive in most cases and thereby deepened students' understanding of some of the key curriculum ideas.  Our geographers, for example, have visited Walton-on-the-Naze, Margate, Herne Bay, Camber Sands, Dungeness and Folkestone, Stratford Olympic Park, and Ebbsfleet Regeneration Area amongst others.  The drama and English departments have taken students to the Globe and Adelphi Theatre;  BFI Southbank; Harry Potter World and many more. The art department took students to the Turner Gallery, V&A Museum, Tate Modern, and the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. The PE department took students to the cyclopark, and psychology students visited the Orchard Theatre and The Freud Museum.  These are just some examples of the many opportunities students have had and for which nearly 2000 spaces had been allocated.

As usual, our Performing Arts department has delivered some exciting performances including: Snow White at christmas and the Addams Family more recently.  We have also had our informal musical concerts and our students have engaged with several events to raise money for a number of charities.

We have also had many individual student achievements throughout the year to celebrate which makes me exceptionally proud as they are living our values of Respect, Aspiration and Care. A few of these examples are: Year 13 chemistry students participated and gained recognition in the Chemistry Olympiad. One of our students was identified as a ‘teen hero’ by the Mirror newspaper, another has raised money for charity through skydiving and we have others winning national and international competitions in boxing, motocross racing, dancing and cheerleading.

In this final module, we have enjoyed an exciting Sports Day, year 11 and 13 proms as well as celebration events to recognise and celebrate some of our most hardworking students and staff.  We are grateful to the Deputy Mayor of Dartford, Andy Lloyd, and the Mayoress for joining us at our prize evening and making the event a memorable one for students, staff and families.

Next week, we welcome most of our incoming year 7 students and their parents to our summer school where the students will be taught some of the key things they will be learning in  September as well as making new friends and getting to know the academy.  Their parents will also have the opportunity to learn more about the academy, our policies, how to support students at home, our digital strategy and meet with some of the tutors.

As we break for the summer holidays, I would like to wish our year 11 and 13 students the very best of luck for the future.  As an academy, we left no stone unturned to ensure that all students were appropriately supported for the GCSEs and A Level examinations, and I am looking forward to some excellent results in August.  Judging from the number of students who attended our taster days last week, the post-16 continues to grow and I look forward to seeing several of our year 11s back into our Outstanding sixth form. Whatever the next steps are for these students, year 11 or 13, I am confident that their futures will be bright and that the foundations we have laid will help them to contribute effectively towards our democratic society

I hope you all enjoy some of the well-deserved summer break and I look forward to welcoming all students back in the first week of September.

Kind regards

Dr F. Donkor

Fishing Trip

A group of students had the opportunity to go fishing at lakes where the charity Fishing for Schools provided qualified angling coaches to help teach the students basic fishing skills. Thankfully, the weather was glorious every day we were there. The students quickly got the hang of it and fish were plentiful. Initially, the early catches were Roach and Rudd with a few Perch, moving onto Bream and Tench and many impressive Carps!

It was great to see how much the students learnt in the sessions and they all pushed their own personal boundaries to do their very best.

Warner Bros

A group of students studying either iMedia or Film Studies had the opportunity to visit the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London - The Making of Harry Potter. Students enjoyed a workshop on how digital graphics are created for film, before being able to explore the tour.

Marley Biggs Year 11

Congratulations to Marley Biggs, who recently performed a sponsored skydive to raise money for Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS). An amazing achievement, well done Marley!

Bronze Duke of Edinburgh's Award

Last weekend, 54 students embarked upon their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh's Award training and practice expedition. The participants worked in their teams to learn new skills including map reading and camp craft, but most importantly, to have an adventure with friends. All of our participants did amazingly well, and we are looking forward to the assessed expedition later this year!

Culture Day

We had tremendous fun celebrating and learning about different cultures during our enrichment week. We tasted and enjoyed food from different parts of the world, played some interesting and unique games, wore some of our best outfits, played with a range of exciting musical instruments and our teachers decorated our hands with henna which was very popular. We are really looking forward to doing this again next year.

Battle of the colleges

Our students have really enjoyed enrichment week, they have impressed us with their creativity, teamwork, perseverance, and communication skills. We have built bridges out of paper and "Walked to Africa", made dresses and outfits from bin liners, and practiced our writing and performing skills through a rap battle. Another great day which we are looking forward to next year.

Super Fundraiser - Erin Malpas

Erin has been very busy the last few weeks helping to raise money for Ochre (Oesophageal Cancer Awareness) in memory of her Grandad.  Last weekend she spent the day busy helping to run a yard sale, selling her old toys and clothes.  This weekend she is taking part in a bake sale.

So far she has helped to raise £145.10 for the charity.

Erin is also putting together another sponsored event for The Trussell Trust (Gravesend) in October.  She has already raised £1500 for them and initiated a voucher campaign with them (whereby she brought £50 food vouchers from Morrisons and donated them to the trust - allowing recipients to choose their own food from a supermarket instead of feeling worried about visiting a food bank - and this is a scheme they have now adopted!) through her Meals for Miles initiative.

We are very proud of her efforts and continued drive to help others.

Expressive Art Dept.

Trip to the Duchess Theatre London

The Expressive Arts department ran a great number of trips this year - 16 to be exact! May saw two very enjoyable trips for GCSE drama students to London. The first was a brilliant evening at the Duchess Theatre for year 11 students watching 'The Play That Goes Wrong' as part of their preparation for their GCSE exam. This hilarious play was thoroughly entertaining and the students took great pleasure in recalling their evening in their exam.

Informal Concert

The music department were thrilled to put on a stripped-back, informal concert in May, showcasing the enormous wealth of talent we have in our students who have peripatetic and private music lessons. Performing in the Matisse Plaza, surrounded by the garden, the audience, made up of parents, carers, friends and staff, were treated to singers and instrumentalists of all ages and abilities, from year 13 performing arts students, to year 7s who have only been having piano lessons for a few months. The whole evening was a joy to watch, but the most enjoyable thing to enjoy was the confidence that students are building every time they perform. A huge congratulations to Ms Evans and her team for putting on another successful concert.

Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre Trip

Miss Clements lead a trip with year 10 to Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre to watch  'A Midsummer Night’s Dream'.  For many students, this was their first time to London, and their first time in the theatre. This fantastic production was a brilliant way to spend a warm afternoon, and the Longfield Academy students, as ever, were excellent ambassadors for the school.

Longfield Academy’s Summer Exhibition

On 12th July, our Summer exhibition will take place from 5pm in the downstairs Matisse plaza. Work from all year groups, from a variety of abilities will be displayed, and open for all to see. This exhibition is open to staff, students, parents and carers, as well as members of the public. Visitors will also be treated to a contemporary dance performance by the members of our dance club, led by Miss Clements. Refreshments will be provided while you take in some of the fantastic work produced by our students throughout this year.

Addams Family Performance

While it might not be the season for spookiness, on Thursday 13th and Friday 14th, a talented bunch of students will be performing The Addams Family: The New Musical at 7pm in our theatre. This award-nominated show was first performed on Broadway, and features all of the much-loved characters from the original films and TV shows, as well as huge range of colourful characters and musical numbers that are sure to entertain.

Tickets can be purchased on ParentPay and are open to everyone.

Mrs Pike - Director of Learning for Expressive Arts

Eid Celebration

Last week saw the end of the Islamic month of Ramadan, and was marked by the celebration Eid. Today in Food Preparation, year 8 students got the chance to make and try some foods traditionally eaten during this celebration, such as Ma'amoul; a shortbread treat containing dates.

UK Chemistry Olympiad

The year 13 chemistry students took part in the UK Chemistry Olympiad this year. This is a competition run by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) which is designed to challenge and inspire chemistry students, and also to develop their critical thinking skills. The following students participated in round one of the 55th annual competition: Raphael Hamilton(absent from photo), Jimmy Hossack, Patrick Aiby and Alfie Guselli. The students represented Longfield Academy and completed a written test on their contextual knowledge of chemistry in real life. We are pleased to announce that based on their high scores Jimmy Hossack received a bronze award and Raphael Hamilton received a silver award. Congratulations to all!

Chess Club

Chess club is an opportunity for students of all skill levels to come together and explore the fascinating world of chess. Chess not only sharpens critical thinking skills but also fosters patience, concentration and sportsmanship. Led by a passionate Maths faculty member (Mrs Patne), the chess club meets every week on Tuesday to engage in friendly matches and learn different techniques. So, if you’re ready to make your move and embark on an intellectual journey, join us at the chess club, where every move matters!

Book Fayre

Longfield Academy hosted its very first Book Fair through Scholastic. There was a lot of buzz around the books available and students engaging with the books on offer! Thank you to everyone who bought books at our Book Fair. We raised £558.77 and have earned £223.51 worth of free books for our school!

Keeping safe in the community

As the summer approaches and students have more free time, please take a moment to discuss safety with them if they are out and about. Make sure they can contact someone in the event of an issue and know places they can go to if they need to obtain help in the event of an emergency.

In particular, we have been made aware of some ongoing Anti Social Behaviour concerns in and around Bluewater Shopping Centre. We know this is a popular destination and we want all of our students to be able to spend time there safely.
